Youth Group This Sunday
The youth group (middle school and high school) will have its first meeting this week, on Sunday morning at 8:30 am. They’ll cook breakfast together and chat about their plans and hopes for the program year. If you haven’t done so already, email erin@grinnellucc.org to RSVP, so we make sure to have enough food for everyone.

Busy Bags – New Activity Books! Our Busy Bags have been cleaned out and refreshed – thanks to Kelsey Sandeno for helping! This Sunday there will be a table in front of the sanctuary with new activity books. These include dot-to-dot, sudoku, sticker activities, how-to-draw, mazes, and more!  Parents, please help your child(ren) select an age-appropriate activity book.

Godly Play Stories 2018-19 Please consider a donation toward the purchase of new stories for our Godly Play classroom. Any amount helps – even if it doesn’t cover the full purchase price of a story. There is a registry sheet in the parlor, or you may leave a donation marked "Godly Play" in the offering plate.

Children’s & Youth Library

“Mom, how come none of Jesus’s disciples were girls?”
“Why didn’t my friend’s mom give him any breakfast today?”
“Dad, I don’t like girls the same way some of my friends do... ”
“Why are they running out of water in California?”
“Someone told my friend to ‘go back to where he came from’, but he’s from Grinnell !?”

Please help us update our library with socially and theologically relevant books that will help our families grapple with these and other tough conversations. Our goal is to purchase 25 new books (at an average of $20 each) that children and parents can look at during worship or borrow for use at home.

As a church community, we are committed to education, to social justice, and to a progressive and inclusive theology: let’s create a library of resources that reflects those values.

Godly Play Teachers
Our Godly Play teaching team this year will include two Grinnell College students, Stephanie Tsang and Acadia Broussard. Both Stephanie and Acadia are student teachers at the Grinnell College Preschool: Stephanie has been working in our nursery since early 2018, and Acadia helped provide childcare for the Ministry Retreat, so they may be familiar faces to some. Please extend a warm welcome to Stephanie and Acadia when you see them. Our other Godly Play teachers this year are Angela Voos, John Rommereim, Liz Rodrigues & Emily Howe. Thank you, teachers, for making this learning program possible!
Sanctuary Sound System
We need several individuals who are willing to learn about our sound system and to take turns monitoring the system during worship services. Adjusting the system to accommodate different voices will make it easier for everyone to hear. Shane Estes has volunteered to head up this group, so if this interests you, please contact him at 236-3428.
Pastor Jessica's Hours

What will a typical work week look like for our new pastor?  Sunday and Tuesday - Friday will be work days for Jessica. Sun, Tues, Wed, & Thurs she will be: leading worship, working in the office, reading and researching for Sunday’s sermon, attending meetings, making pastoral visits, doing denominational work, collaborating with the local ministerial association, being present for you as needed. Fridays will be sermon writing days which she will do from her home office. Mondays and Saturdays will be Jessica's days “off” - with Sabbath priority given to Monday as Saturdays can be busy days in the life of the church and she will need be flexible.

Nametags Please
Remember to wear your nametags as a way of welcoming newcomers to the church, including new pastors. If you do not have a nametag, please contact Elizabeth in the office.
Neighbors in Need Offering, Sunday, October 7
Neighbors In Need (NIN) supports the UCC’s ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. Two-thirds of the offering is used by the UCC’s Justice & Witness Ministries to fund a wide array of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects, including such issues as the federal budget, voting rights, immigration, health care, hate crimes, civil liberties, and environmental justice.  One-third of the offering supports our American Indian neighbors in the UCC through the UCC’s Council for American Indian Ministries (CAIM). Please consider a gift to Neighbors in Need on October 7.
Care for Creation News
Pizza boxes can be recycled--unless they are really greasy (recycling plants can't get oil out of the cardboard).  If just half of a pizza box is greasy, tear off that half and throw it away, putting the clean half in the recycling bin.  Also, be sure to dump out any crumbs, and if there is a liner inside the box, remove that as well.
