Somewhere on the Tomato Spectrum

Super September!

Market News for Thursday, September 13th

We're open from 3 to 7 pm every Thursday
in the northwest corner of Dufferin Grove Park.

Dear Market Friends,

Hooray! Even though we’re well past labour day, it’s actually  still summer! And the abundance of sunshine and warm weather we’ve been having, certainly are complying with that! Yes, it’s true – we will have less and less daylight to look forward to, but the visual wonderland that fall promises, will soon be upon us!

Ok, you get it, I’m a bit of an optimist – but it costs nothing! And with the amazing supply of late summer veggies and fruit, who can blame me? Moreover, Anne’s sunny persona really has a way of rubbing off on people! This is Nicole by the way, (her assistant). You may have seen me buzzing around the market each week – frequently saying hi to someone’s dog, or engaging in some other form of hip-hip-hooray! Well in Anne’s absence, it will be me sending the market news for the next couple of weeks – so if it’s a little out there, (you get the picture!)

So first off, welcome back to Jason Kun of Island Oysters, who will be working his special kind of magic for us again! And, he’ll even be cooking up some yummy mussels as well!

This week be prepared to feast on early squashes, while still enjoying delicious organic corn, for as long as you can! Zucchini, various greens, and carrots, along with yummy fall fruit like Concord grapes, berries and marvellous melons, are also there for the taking! And finally, tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes!

Need I say more? Perhaps not, but there definitely will be more!

Shred Harvest for example, will have lots of habaneros, san marzano paste tomatoes and eggplants. All available in bulk or small quantities too. Along with the usual beans, garlic, onions, arugula, zucchini, beets, carrots, lettuce, pac choi’s, napa cabbage, leeks and winter squash!

Ted Thorpe will be bringing lots of squash and fabulous celery this week! Along with juicy watermelon, tomatoes, cabbage, onion, gorgeous kale, and much more! Ted is also having another amazing farm party on his farm on Sunday September 23, where Shuffle Demons will be performing! See the Thorpe’s Organics Facebook page, or visit Ted’s table tomorrow, and pick up a flyer.

Red Dog will also be there one last time this season, with amazing heritage garlic – get some!

Southbrook winery is also returning with fabulous local, organic  VQAs!

In addition, Boomerang Bags TO will be visiting once again to help us reduce our carbon footprint. They will also be introducing Bare Market to the Dufferin Grove Community.

Bare Market is your package-free, one-stop shop selling affordable and locally sourced home and body care products to help you move towards a less disposable lifestyle. You can bring along your own containers to fill up, borrow theirs and/or simply find helpful solutions to common plastic packaged goods. Boomerang Bags TO will be right by their side encouraging the shifts in reducing our consumer waste and help you carry home your goods in a community made reusable bags.

First Fish regrets that they cannot be there tomorrow, as weather has made it difficult for fishermen to go out and fish. But perhaps a wonderful “Cosmopolitan Cabaret” of music can soften that blow. Dancing shoes optional.

See you at market!

Nicole Jacobs
