Online Q&A Videos

For FASD Awareness Day 2018, the Network held a ‘Questions & Answers’ event in Saskatoon on September 6th. The panel consisted of caregivers and individuals with FASD who shared tips and strategies based on their personal experiences of life with FASD. The feedback after the event was so encouraging that we decided to continue providing education and answers to questions about FASD.

For the month of September, we have been filming short videos to answer questions we didn’t get to during the event and additional questions that have been submitted on our Facebook page. So visit our Facebook page or YouTube channel to check out our mini video series on FASD strategies.

Free FASD Post-secondary Presentations

The Network is excited to start our fourteenth year of offering free FASD presentations in Saskatchewan post-secondary institutes.

The aim of the FASD Post-secondary Training is to educate students about FASD and help prepare them for their future careers. FASD is a unique disability that requires knowledge and understanding of the fundamental behaviours. During these presentations, students gain an understanding of the lived experience of FASD and are challenged to consider how they might use this knowledge of FASD to make a difference in their future careers.

There is no cost to have an FASD presentation in your classroom as this initiative is funded by the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority. It is open to all post-secondary institutions and adult basic education classes across Saskatchewan.

Each presentation is tailored to suit the specific curriculum from a variety of fields including education, social work, youth care, early childhood education, nursing, pharmacy and more!

Last year, 1119 Saskatchewan students attended one of our post-secondary presentations. The feedback we received from these students and instructors was very positive:

98% of students agreed the content was useful
96% of students gained a better understanding of FASD
96% of students agreed they will use this information in their future careers

If you would like more information or to book a presentation in your classroom, contact the Network’s Training Coordinator.

CIFASD Research study looking for participants

The Collaborative Initiative on FASD (CIFASD) has launched a research study to investigate how genetics affects various outcomes due to prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE).  The study, led by Dr. Tatiana Foroud at Indiana University, is enrolling people with PAE ages 7 or older.  Everything is done online and participants provide facial photographs and a saliva sample.  Please go to https://digfasd.org or contact us at fasd@iu.edu or 1‑844‑378-0002 (toll-free) for more information.

The DiG FASD research study is investigating how genes might protect against or increase vulnerability to prenatal alcohol exposure.  To do this, we are recruiting anyone ages 7 and up with an FASD or prenatal alcohol exposure who speaks English.  Everything is done from home, and there is no cost to the participants (we pay for shipping).  We ask them to answer a few questions, take some photos and upload them to our secure server, and provide a saliva sample (using a tube which we send to them with a pre-paid return envelope).  We hope that the results of the study will improve FASD diagnosis and treatment in the future. DiG FASD is part of the Collaborative Initiative on FASD (CIFASD), an interdisciplinary consortium of FASD researchers from all over the world.
