Dimuthu Daluwatte appointed as focal point for compiling outcomes and impacts by Cap-Net affiliated networks

Cap-Net Lanka was selected to take the leading role in compiling outcomes and impacts of various capacity development programmes conducted by all the Cap-Net affiliated networks during 2017. Cap-Net Lanka has appointed one of his members Dimuthu Daluwatte as focal point for this task and he will be working closely with the global secretariat to document outcomes and impacts of the Cap-Net programme.

Dimuthu has a BSc in Fisheries and Marine Sciences at University of Ruhuna and currently reading for post-graduate in Water and Sanitation at University of Jaffna. He is currently serving World Vision Lanka as a programme coordinator, therefore he brings his professional and community level project experiences in support of MELP execution at Cap-Net.

SAWA Regional Workshop on ‘Leadership and Research Methods for Interdisciplinary Water Research’

SaciWATERs in partnership with Nepal Engineering College organised a workshop on ‘Leadership and research methods for interdisciplinary water research’ from 24 August–5 September 2018 in Nepal.

It was conceptualized under the ‘South Asian Water (SAWA) Leadership Program on Climate Change’. It is a leadership program that awards fellowships to women pursuing Masters in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in South Asia. The training was co-funded by IDRC and Cap-Net.

Cap-Net Lanka Water Forum and Junior Water Awards ceremony was held on 1 October 2018 in University of Peradeniya. Winning projects from schools of two districts were announced and the children presented their projects to the wider audience comprised of water professionals from various water related institutions in Sri Lanka.

Mr. Pablo Orams, Senior Project Officer, International Water Centre, Queensland, Australia and Mr Steve Attard, AgriTech Solutions, Australia graced the occasion sharing their experiences and capacity building efforts.

Capacity development of farmer leaders in major irrigation schemes

A Climate Change Adaptation programme for Allai Major Irrigation Scheme in Trincomalee district was held in Sri Lanka on 10 September. It was targeted for officers and farmer leaders of Allai Scheme. 74 participants included 33 officers from the line agencies working in the scheme, other participants were FO leaders.

The Programme was organized by Cap-Net Lanka in collaboration with Sri Lanka Water Partnership, Irrigation Management Division of the Ministry of Irrigation, Irrigation Department and Department of Agriculture. Dr. S Pathmarajah (Cap-Net Lanka), Dr. N S Nijamudeen (DoA) and Eng. K. Akilan (ID) served as resources persons.

Promoting the Application of Environmental Flows in the Management of Transboundary River Basins in Southern Africa

WaterNet has been implementing a pilot project on the application of environmental flows in the Pungwe/Buzi/Save catchment areas in Mozambique and Zinbabwe. The pilot started in 2017 and will come to an end in November 2018.

The main objective of the pilot is build human capacity in the two countries so that they able to work cooperatively in the determination and implementation of environmental flows in the three basins.

A half-day Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Plans (MELP) workshop on Climate Change Adaptation was conducted at the Irrigation Department, Wariyapola, Sri Lanka on 17 September 2018. The workshop was targeted for the farmer leaders and representatives in a medium irrigation schemes. 23 participants included 5 females.

Mr. DMM Dissanayake, Former DD, Provincial Dept. of Agriculture, NWP, Mr. UG Abeygunawardena, Consultant, SLWP and Dr. S. Pathmarajah, Country Coordinator, Cap-Net Lanka served as resource persons.

Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) training for the Cuvelai Watercourse Commission

A four day training on IWRM related issues was held for Cuvelai Watercourse Commission CUVECOM from 11–14 September 2018 in Ondangwa, Namibia. The training was attended by 29 senior officials from Angola and Namibia.

The objective of the training course was to introduce participants to the concept and principles of IWRM, and how IWRM can be practically applied at various scales in the Cuvelai Basin.

WaterNet facilitated a training course in Portuguese on Financing of Water Infrastructure Projects which was held in Maputo, Mozambique, from 21–24 August 2018.

The objective of the course was to build skills and knowledge on how Member States can adopt innovative approaches for mobilising financial resources for water infrastructure projects. The course was attended by participants from Angola and Mozambique.
