Starz's America To Me Documentary Series is Coming to a City Near You!

The 10-part docu-series America to Me  explores issues of racial equity within a school setting in Oak Park, IL (the site of a decade-long housing integration effort). The supporting guides provide an opportunity for GARE members and our supporters to take another step to normalize conversations about race. Given the realities named in the series, what are the interventions possible? How can we do better advancing racial equity within government and working in partnership with communities?

Each week, the Participant Media team will be in a different city, screening an episode. Here's where they'll visit.
  • New York City (9/8): The NYC screening of episode 3 will be at 4pm at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

  • Sign up to join the campaign.
  • Sign up to host a discussion group and lead the change you want to see.
  • Check out the  America To Me: Real Talk Digital Experience.  It helps viewers understand what inequitable systems and traditions look like and what structural change is.  It’s immersive – part conversation guide, part toolkit – and is created for every America to Me episode.  The Real Talk guide uses America to Me as a catalyst for conversation. It encourages viewers to think about similar examples in their own schools and communities – the statues in the courtyard, the names on the wall, the practice facilities given to different teams, the things kids are disciplined for and not disciplined for, who gets punished. The goal of the guide is to help viewers find ways to disrupt everyday racism.

The People Behind the Movement

Katie Balderas

When I was working at the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, I went to some introductory GARE trainings and it really opened my eyes to how so many of our government policies and procedures are influenced by race. All the health issues that I had been focusing on could be traced to different policies rooted in structural racism.

We have to be explicit about racial inequity and take ownership over how government created the situation we now live in. We need to acknowledge our role in it in order to undo it. It’s slow going, and we will certainly make mistakes, but that shouldn’t stop us. I believe that those of us who work in government need to operate with more accountability, humility, and humanity.
