48 Contestants. 48 Hours. One Winning Idea.

Now in its third season, the Make48 competition provides an opportunity for teams to participate in a "weekend invent-a-thon." Teams have 48 hours to plan, prototype, and pitch an idea for prizes—and licensing potential. Contestants have access to various digital fabrication tools (including a ShopBot Desktop and a ShopBot PRSalpha 5'x10' gantry tool), a well-stocked wood and metal shop, and a number of professionals to help with everything from the brainstorming process to searching for existing patents.

As a third-year product design student at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, Sarah Burns works at the makerspace in the university's library where they have a ShopBot Desktop. For this season of Make48, Sarah attended as a tool tech representing ShopBot Tools.

Read about her experience at Make48, and her unique insights into the competition, in her recent post on the ShopBot blog.

ShopBot on the Road

IWF 2018 in Atlanta

From August 22nd through August 25th, ShopBot Tools exhibited at the International Woodworking Fair, located in the Georgia World Congress Center, Atlanta, GA. ShopBot founder, Ted Hall, kicked off the schedule of events by delivering his talk "CNC and the Changing Face of Manufacturing" at the IWF CNC Symposium, presented by FDMC Magazine and Woodworking Network. Ted spoke to a captive audience about the history of CNC in general, and ShopBot specifically, highlighting the advantages of CNC-infused workflows. Ted was followed by other CNC industry leaders who presented on topics including CNC software selection, efficiency, tooling, among others.

Over in our booth (unfortunately numbered 666), ShopBot showed the 4’x8’ PRSalpha, equipped with the Automatic Tool Changer, as well as a ShopBot Desktop with a 24”x18” work bed. Our offerings demonstrated the diversity of tools we offer to assist woodworkers of all types. On the 4’x8’ tool, we had a cabinet making demonstration to show how raised panel doors and cabinet casework can be cut accurately, repeatably, and efficiently, all without changing tools by hand. On the Desktop, we demonstrated how furniture makers can carve intricate, 3-dimensional forms (which was demonstrated with a chair seat at the show) with great accuracy, repeatability, and speed.

Our booth hummed with visits from many woodworking professionals either looking to introduce CNC into their workflow, or coming to share success stories as recent–or long-time–ShopBot owners. We really enjoy the rare opportunity when woodworkers poke their heads out of their shops to show us what they’ve been up to with their ShopBots! We look forward to seeing everyone again at AWFS 2019 and IWF 2020!

September's Cabinet Making Workshop is now FULL. If you're interested in being informed of the next time it is being offered, please email us at info@shopbottools.com

USITT Master Class at Coastal Carolina University

ShopBot's Sallye Coyle and Richard Hill went to Coastal Carolina University, in Conway, SC to lead two days of Master Classes done in conjunction with USITT (the United States Institute for Theatre Technology). The host school already had a ShopBot PRSstandard in use in their theatre department, so along with the two ShopBot Desktops and the Handibot® Smart Power Tool they brought with them, Sallye and Richard were able to cover a variety of material with the attendees.

They taught the workshop participants about everything from the mechanics of ShopBot tools (including how to set-up a tool to cut and how to change out a bit) to 2D and 3D machining. Sallye shares her observations and perspective of the event via her most recent ShopBot blog post.
