Tri-Cities Literacy News for September

September 8th is International Literacy Day!

Literacy and Skills Development

On 8 September 2018, International Literacy Day (ILD) will be celebrated around the world with the theme ‘Literacy and skills development’. Despite progress made, literacy challenges persist, and at the same time the demands for skills required for work, evolve rapidly. This year, ILD explores and highlights integrated approaches that simultaneously can support the development of literacy and skills, to ultimately improve people’s life and work and contribute to equitable and sustainable societies.

September is Literacy Month in BC

It’s Literacy Month in BC! During this month, we lead a province-wide campaign to raise awareness of the importance of literacy and raise funds to support community-based literacy programs and initiatives.

Through small, local actions we can all foster literacy in our communities.

Get ideas for ways you can foster literacy from our Fostering Literacy Tips Calendar for September 2018:

Stories Galore & More

This summer, we worked very closely with the Terry Fox Library, the Port Moody Library and the Coquitlam Public Library to bring Stories Galore and More to the community. So, during July and August, our facilitator Mireya, along with librarians from these three libraries as well as numerous volunteers from the community and SUCCESS, visited five parks per week for six weeks.  The program was an incredible success yet again because of the partnerships of many community organizations. A HUGE thank you to all the organizations who helped us get this off the ground once again:  Coquitlam Parks and Rec, Port Coquitlam Parks and Rec, The City of Port Moody, SUCCESS, Terry Fox Library, Port Moody Library and the Coquitlam Public Library.  We also want to thank Kinsight and Share for attending our program at various locations. This program was made possible with the financial support of Decoda and Raise a Reader and the staffing support of the three libraries.

Our final count of participants over the six weeks:  1406 children and adults!! Those numbers are proof that this is a much needed and much loved program! If you are interested in helping fund this program so we are able to run it again next summer, please contact Ann at tricitiesliteracy@gmail.com.
