Dear Students, Families, Alumni, Parishioners, and Friends of ASB School,

Happy Wednesday!  We have completed 6 ½ days of school and it has been a wonderful start to the year.  As I visit classrooms and navigate crowded hallways, I have loved seeing students that are highly engaged, excited to learn, and happy to be at school.  I have also loved seeing faculty and staff enjoying their work and getting to know their students.  They work hard to prepare for the start of the year and I have to say that the ease with which the year has begun makes it feel like we never left.  As always, I am so grateful for the professionals we have at ASB.

I read a wonderful quote this summer from writer Ayesha Saddiqi.  “Be the person you needed when you were young.”  I have thought about this quote quite a bit in the last few months, both as a parent of two adolescent children and as a principal of a Catholic school.  I think it is easy to misread this quote as telling us to be what we thought we needed when we were young – and, as we all know, what we thought we needed as children and teens was probably very different than what we actually needed.  Thank you to our own parents for recognizing that.  That being said, it does challenge us to remember what young people need and that is often different than what we need as adults.  It also calls us to be models for our children; we all know that is something we all needed when we were young.  I plan to keep this quote at the forefront of what I say and do as I go through the year, and will frame the rest of this letter in that context.

When we were young, we needed adults who guided our participation in faith.  I guarantee when we were young, we battled our parents on having to say prayer at the dinner table, attend mass, participate in service, and talk about faith.  I know that I as hit middle school especially, those were the last things I wanted to do.  But my parents knew what I needed as a young person.  They knew that I needed to be forced to sit down with my family every Sunday and share the responsibility of leading prayer with my siblings.  They knew I needed to go to church in order to fully participate in my faith community.  They knew I needed to be reminded that the world was bigger than me and show me how to put the needs of others first.  They knew that a Catholic education would support each of the above.  I want to thank you for knowing those things for your own children as well.  In that spirit, I encourage you to join us for our first all school mass, the Mass of the Holy Spirit, on Friday, September 21st at 1:30 in the gym.  All families and faiths are welcome and it is a wonderful opportunity for us to begin our year in the spirit and love that are the roots of this community.

When we were young, we needed adults who were invested in our education.  Each of you is that for your children and I am so grateful for each of your commitment to the education provided at ASB.  I thank you in advance for attending our Curriculum Nights.  I look forward to seeing PreK-5 families tonight at 7:00 PM in the gym and 6-8 families next Wednesday, September 19th.  This is a wonderful way to not only learn about what the year has in store, but also to model the importance of partnership and collaboration between parents and teachers.  Young people need to know that they have a team of people supporting them, teaching them, and expecting the best of each of them.

We had a wonderful evening at the home of David and Tara Uffleman for our PreK-2 families to learn about our capital campaign and updates on our building project.  When we were young, we needed adults to show us how to open our homes to all and work together to build what is needed in our community.  I am so grateful to the Uffelmans for their hospitality and welcome.  I am also grateful to Grant & Julia Hartvigson, who will host an evening in their home next Monday, September 17th, and to Jack & Carol Salerno, who will host an evening in their home Monday, October 1st.  If you are able to attend, please do.  All are welcome, even if your child is not in the designated grade levels.  We want to be sure all have the opportunity to come together and hear about the future of ASB.

I have to end with a story.  I was visiting one of the first grade classrooms.  It was the end of the day and the students were packing up, putting folders away, heading to rug spots.  I am always amazed at the growth of students year to year and it was clear these students were ready for first grade – no more kindergarten!  As I sat to the side of the room, a first grader walked over to me and said, “I have something for you.” He smiled and put a little gold heart sticker in my hand, then walked away.  It was such a sweet gesture and I thought, “If I were this student, what would I need?”  So I stuck that gold heart sticker on the back of my phone and the next time I saw the first grader, I showed him the new decoration on my phone case.  The excitement on his face was perfect.  Sometimes being the person we needed when we were young is recognizing the impact of all of the small things that make a big difference for our children.

Have a wonderful rest of the week and a joyful weekend.

Best,
Kathleen Conklin

4th grade and new students
All 4th grade and new students interested in joining the ASB Band Program should attend the "Instrument Petting Zoo" being held on Wednesday, 9/26 at 7:00pm in the Performing Arts Center (5th grade classrooms).  This will                                       be a wonderful opportunity for students to find the right instrumental fit.                                           Parents will given information regarding the band schedule, concerts,                                               private lessons, and much more!  I hope to see you there!

Fall Play Auditions announced!
Assumption-St. Bridget Theatre Ensemble proudly announces our 2018 fall production:  Charles Dickens' holiday classic, A Christmas Carol!
Subtitled "a ghost story of Christmas," Dickens' tale tells the story of the elderly and grasping miser, Ebenezer Scrooge, who shuns everything but the pleasures of his counting house.  One Christmas Eve, Scrooge is haunted by the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley, and by three spirits, whose visions--of Scrooge's lonely past, his miserable present, and the inevitable terrifying future wrought by a lifetime of selfishness and greed--awaken Scrooge to the joy of what might be.  An enlightened and transformed Mr. Scrooge greets Christmas Day with love, kindness, compassion, and charity--imbued with the joy of Christmas itself.
Our production opens at North Seattle College on Thursday, November 15th and closes on Sunday, November 18th.  The curtain rises at 7 PM on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and at 2:30 PM on Sunday.
7th and 8th grade actors can sign up for an audition by going HERE

ASB Cross Country is looking for a new coordinator!

David Graves has served as cross country coordinator for the last 7 years, and has coached cross country at ASB for over 10 years.  I have been so lucky to have David as our cross country coordinator, and I am so thankful for all that he has done at ASB.  Now, we need to find his replacement.  David and I think that it would be best to have someone come aboard as the coordinator in training this season, learn the responsibilities along side David and then take over next year, with David still around to assist.  If you are interested, please contact David Graves or Dylan Pouley.  Both can explain the requirements and commitments that come along with the role.

Cross Country meets will take place at Lower Woodland on the following dates (we do not know yet if ASB will be in Group A or Group B):

Sunday, September 23, 2018
Group A @ 1:00 p.m. & Group B @ 3:15 p.m.
