Hello, nerdfighters!

For those of you who've recently headed back to school, happy back-to-school! And for everyone else, happy life in general! We have some big announcements this month!

WNYC Studios Partnership

We're super excited to share that Dear Hank & John, The Anthropocene Reviewed, and a NEW podcast called SciShow Tangents will be joining the WNYC Studios network! You can read all about this new partnership here. Get ready for some great podcasting coming your way!
Submit Your Art!

It’s time to get ready for the 2018 Project for Awesome!

If you’re new here and aren’t familiar with the Project for Awesome, the basic premise is this: People make videos supporting their favorite charities, the community votes for its favorites, and the funds go to the organizations with the most votes (as well as two nonprofits chosen by John and Hank). Most of the money is raised through the Indiegogo campaign, where people can make donations in exchange for cool stuff. One really amazing perk we like to do is the Nerdfighter Art perk. This is where you come in! Here’s what you need to know if you’d like to contribute your art to the P4A:

  • Ideally, you will be making 15+ items and shipping them to Missoula, Montana to be distributed to the people who claimed the Nerdfighter Art perk! (If you have something cool you want to make but can't make 15, we still want to read your proposal! A few of something super cool is still great.)
  • We’re looking for small, easily shipped items. This can include knitwear, small plushies, small drawings and paintings, digital art prints, etc. Nothing super big or super fragile.
  • The pieces of art do not need to be nerdfighter themed, but it is highly encouraged!
  • The estimated worth of the art should be about $25-30 because the perk will be sold for $40. That’s not a strict amount, just something to keep in mind when making your proposals.
  • If you’re interested, please email nerdfighterart@gmail.com by October 10th with an example of what you have/will be creating and what quantity. A picture of it for us to see would be extra helpful when sorting through everyone’s submissions.
  • We will let you know if it looks like a good fit for P4A and provide additional information as soon as we can, giving you a good amount of time to create your pieces. We’d like you to ship them to us no later than November 20th.

If you want to see some examples of nerdfighter art, scroll through the P4A Tumblr and the Nerdfighter Art Tumblr.

We can’t wait to see what you create!

Vlogbrothers Sponsorships

John and Hank are ready to choose more creators for the Vlogbrothers sponsorship! Half the money generated from pre-roll advertisements on the Vlogbrothers YouTube channel goes to the Foundation to Decrease World Suck, one quarter goes to Complexly's new and developing educational video projects, and the other quarter goes into the sponsorship fund. John and Hank disburse this money to a few selected applicants.

If you are working on an online educational/informational/super awesome project, apply!
SciShow Writers Wanted
SciShow is looking for experienced freelance writers! If you want to write for SciShow or any of its spinoff channels, fill out this application by September 12th.
Nerdfighter Poetry Book
Nerdfighteria is particularly amazing at being creative and collaborative, and this book is a wonderful example of what this community can accomplish. The book is a collection of poetry written by nerdfighters, and it will be available in both physical and digital form on November 20th. You can preorder the Kindle version now!

All proceeds will go to the Foundation to Decrease World Suck! When you buy this book, you are increasing the awesome in the world both by sharing art and by supporting charities. You're awesome. Nerdfighteria is awesome. I'm kind of emotional about how awesome this whole thing is, actually.
More Nerdfighter Projects
Speaking of nerdfighters being cool and doing cool things, there's a great project going on right now that involves nerdfighters making Carls (the robot on the cover of An Absolutely Remarkable Thing) and placing them all around the world. You can find the papercraft template to make your own Carl at thecarlsarecoming.com, where you can also submit your creation to have it added to the map!

If you want to discuss the Carl project or An Absolutely Remarkable Thing in general, there's a Discord for that! Join Fans of An Absolutely Remarkable Thing (or FAART, if you will) here!

The second nerdfighter project happening is a SECRET, so HANK AND JOHN STOP READING NOW PLEASE. THANK YOU.

I'M SERIOUS.

THE REST OF THIS NEWSLETTER IS NOT FOR YOU. CLICK AWAY NOW.

Okay, assuming they're gone (*stares pointedly*), let's get back to the secret matter at hand. In 2007, an epic compilation of nerdfighter happy dances appeared on the vlogbrothers channel. This was pure joy and goodness, and we want to do it again! All the information about this project and how to submit your happy dance can be found here (and I highly recommend reading that post!), but here's the basic guide:
  • If possible, please make your happy dances 10 seconds long (excluding you turning on and off the camera). Shorter is also fine!
  • The deadline for sending in your happy dances is December 1st. The finished Happy Dance Project 2.0 will be posted on December 24th!
  • Incorporating references to vlogbrothers history is highly encouraged!
  • So is dancing in exotic/fun locations!
  • And most importantly: Have fun with it! If you don't feel like making it complicated, don't; if you want to dance on top of a pyramid with sharpie face and a green mohawk whilst spraying silly string and licking a cat, DO!
  • Send your videos to verysecretproject@gmail.com.

It's going to be a surprise gift from Nerdfighteria to Hank and John, so don't tell them!!!!

That's it for now! Thanks for reading, and DFTBA!
