FIRST FALL EVENT - opening reception for Steven G. Smith, San Antonio Art League's Artist of the Year for 2018

Please join us this Sunday, September 9th, from 3-5 p.m. to honor Steve Smith, our Artist of the Year.

The San Antonio Art League and Museum has named Steven G. Smith its Artist of the Year for 2018. This honor has been given to a regional artist annually since 1946. Smith joins a list of iconic SAALM Artists of the Year, including Amy Freeman Lee, Cecil Casebier, Robert Tiemann, Marilyn Lanfear, and Charles Field. He will be honored at a reception and opening at the San Antonio Art League and Museum, 130 King William Street on Sunday, September 9th from 3-5 p.m.

Visitors to the opening will enjoy food and wine, live jazz by Henry Brun's International Trio, and a chance to visit with the Artist of the Year. Steve was featured in an article by Peter Szarmach in this week's Rivard Report - you can read it here.

Viewers will have the chance to see and appreciate Steve Smith’s work first-hand starting with the September 9th opening and continuing until Friday, October 26th. The San Antonio Art League and Museum is free and open to the public. Hours are 10-3 Tuesday through Saturday. For more information, visit www.saalm.org.

SAALM participates in Museum Month (October 2018)
For the first time, the San Antonio Art League & Museum is participating in Museum Month, which celebrates the museums and other cultural institutions of San Antonio. We are one of 12 major institutions whose representatives have been meeting since the first of the year to plan this great cultural collaboration.

Here is a link to the calendar of events - 13 Great Things to Do During Museum Month

The Art League's Museum Month event will take place on Sunday, October 7th, with Steve Smith's Artist of the Year Gallery Talk, the general membership meeting, and a jazz concert on the lawn.
Beth Eidelberg, well-know watercolor artist and long-time member of the San Antonio Art League, left a generous bequest to SAALM in her will. In her honor, the Art League has established a fund with the San Antonio Area Foundation to provide an award of $1000 to be given during the Annual Artists Exhibition which is held every spring and is in its 89th year.

Any artist working in watermedia - watercolor, acrylic, gouche - whose work is accepted into the Exhibition will be eligible to receive this award. The winning work will be selected by the juror of the Annual Exhibition. We are grateful to Beth's family for making possible this award in her honor.
Delicious new workshop at Semmes Studio on September 29, 2-4 p.m.

Learn to master the art of the memorable meal by creating elegant garnishes that turn your plate presentation from ordinary to extraordinary. Beautiful garnishes are the defining details that will elevate your cuisine and will make your guests feel special.

JOIN US FOR A CULINARY FEAST WORKSHOP, TAUGHT BY SAALM'S OWN CHEF XAVIER FLORES, AT THE SEMMES STUDIO

Chef Xavier Flores is a native San Antonian who began cooking when he was five years old, helped and encouraged by his mother, aunt and grandmother who recognized his talent. When he was 18, he entered into the army and trained to become a chef. He travelled all over the world, tasting and exploring the flavors of the countries he visited.

After leaving military life, Chef Xavier work for three major hotel chains as well as every military base in San Antonio where he perfected his food artistry. Realizing that not every Chef knew how to carve fruits and vegetables, he made it his mission to teach up-and-coming chefs. He has taught hundreds of young people who have become chefs all over the world.

SAALM members as well as the general public are invited to watch and learn from this personable, talented chef. Tuition for this event is $35 and is limited to twelve participants. For details and registration, please visit our Workshop website page.
MORE WORKSHOP NEWS
The Semmes Studio
is also the location for a sold-out collaborative workshop between the Art League and the Potters Guild:

Fun with Paper Clay
Saturday, September 8th, from 1-4 pm
Semmes Studio, San Antonio Art League & Museum
130 King William

Leslie Newton from the SA Potters Guild and Lyn Belisle from SAALM will co-teach participants about learning how to make and use paper clay (porcelain). Proceeds from the workshop will benefit the San Antonio Potters Guild and the San Antonio Art League. The Potters Guild will use the funds for their scholarship, and SAALM wil use the funds for new studio shelves.

Even though the workshop is sold out, you are welcome to drop by and see the workshop in action! We are, as always, so grateful to the Semmes Foundation for making this teaching space possible.
 SAALM COMMUNITY COLLABORATIONS:

Blair Ortmann, Development Director for SAMMinistries, will visit the SAALM Board Meeting in October to describe how our artist members can help with their Empty Bowls initiative. We have had an ongoing discussion with Blair about this win-win collaboration that will help San Antonio's homeless population. Details about how SAALM members can participate will be shared soon.

And its still not too late to support SAMMinistries through their Gala: Boots, Bowties, & Bling, this Saturday, September 8th.

A 5x7' version of distinguished watercolorist E. Gordon West's "Reflections" painting was chosen to grace the main altar at the Episcopal Church of the Reconciliation in San Antonio. Congratulations, Gordon!

Gordon is an active member of the San Antonio Art League's Board of Directors. He is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, the Texas Watercolor Society, the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, and the Watercolor USA Honor Society.  He has received over 60 awards in national exhibitions and has works in the permanent collections of the McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, TX,  the Texas A&M University, and the University of Louisville which recently honored him in an exhibition of his paintings as a Hite Scholar.
INVENTORY/BUILDING UPDATE

The Art League was closed for two weeks during August for inventory and organization. The Permanent Collection is safe, sound and recorded for condition and location. Many thanks to the Inventory team who checked all 500+ works:
Gordon West, Edie Collins, Mike Belisle, David Johle, Dona Walston, Frankie Boone, Mary Ann Johnson, Bill Kurtin.

How do you move a huge, priceless painting by  William Merritt Chase from an upstairs gallery to the downstairs vault? Verrrrrry carefully! David Johle, Bill Kurtin and Mike Belisle accomplished the scary task as part of the inventory process.

Our contractor, Ruben Tamez, has almost finished the work on the last phase of the Semmes Studio storage space. The bare fiberglass insulation and the old paint were critical safety hazards, and have been removed or properly covered. Thanks to those of you who helped with the clean-out!

Goodbye to the scary exposed insulation and rickety shelves
Members Gallery and Gift Shop join in revised scheduling of new works

Both the upstairs Members Gallery and the downstairs Small Works Gift Shop will begin scheduling new member artists for 2019. Both selected artists' groups will show for a three-month period during the year, and a joint opening is planned when new artists bring in their work. More details will be announced soon -- stay tuned!
SAVE THE DATES FOR UPCOMING EXHIBIT OPENINGS AT THE ART LEAGUE THIS FALL/WINTER:

This year's Invitational Exhibit, opening on November 4th
, will be a feast for the eyes with glorious paintings by Vikki Fields and Sylvia Benitez.

The Invitational Exhibit will close on Sunday, December 16, which is also the day of our festive Holiday Party for members and their guests.

But wait - there's more!
On Wednesday, December 19th, the Art League hosts another holiday event for the opening of Billy Keen's exhibit, Visions of Santa: Celebrating 45 Years of Santa Images, Celebrating 300 Years of San Antonio,  which will delight holiday visitors through the 31st.
