September 2018
Dear MNC member
Our AGM was held on 30th August with a good attendance. We welcome the 2018 Management Committee: Greg Williams (President), Nicole Hilton (Vice President), Barry Smith (Treasurer), Katharine Fernance (Secretary) and board members Tim Bagshaw, Ray James, Colin Dixon, Frances Harper, Margaret McKenzie and Jim Straker. Thank you to all who nominated.
Suicide remains the leading cause of death for Australians aged between 15 and 44. This is a shocking statistic and MNC is particularly proactive in helping to increase the community's awareness of this issue.
The Maleny Youth Festival is coming up next week – we'd love to see you there!

(10 Sept) and World Suicide Prevention Day (13 Sept)

In Australia suicide remains the leading cause of death for Australians aged between 15 and 44. 2,866 people died from suicide in Australia in 2016 and each year over 65,000 Australians make a suicide attempt. (RUOK website, Lifeline, Blackdog Institute)
All these are dire statistics and we as a community have been all too familiar with suicide. MNC has been focused on suicide prevention and giving locals the tools or strategies to assist someone at risk, especially through our SafeTALK training.
The key things to assist someone who is in trouble are:
There are protective factors that make us more resilient and can reduce suicidal behaviour, such as:
  • supportive social relationships
  • a sense of control
  • a sense of purpose
  • family harmony
  • effective help-seeking
  • positive connections to good health services
Maleny R U OK Day, 12 September (see Upcoming Events below)

Barung helpers contribute to the MNC garden

As part of its Skilling Queenslanders for Work program, Barung has been at MNC in full swing; wielding picks, brushcutters and native tube stock in order to regenerate and clean up most of the gardens around the centre over the past month. MNC is grateful for their help and we love how beautiful it all looks.

VOLUNTEER PROFILE

Sheila Jenkins
I came to Maleny a year ago from the UK to be with my family, when I lost my husband. Coming to a new country and environment, it was important to me to integrate into the community.
As I had always volunteered in my community, it was the obvious thing to do here. I investigated a number of organisations, including MNC. I received a very warm welcome and started volunteering in September last year.
There is a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere, everybody is supportive of each other and there is a good rapport between staff and volunteers. The tasks are varied and I have made some really good friends. Come along and see for yourself, and there is plenty of tea and coffee!

Intensive training for young African leaders

MNC has been helping to support young future leaders of African agriculture. Twenty eight young Africans from eight different countries were in Maleny as part of their studies earlier this month. They are the 2018 recipients of prestigious Australia Awards to undertake six weeks intensive training in Australia as part of a nine month program.
Back home, most of them work in disadvantaged rural communities, tackling problems such as poverty among smallholder farmers and youth unemployment. Their Maleny visit was part of a project to study the whole chain involved in dairy production, from consumers back to small family farms.

CHASM Housing fundraising for Homelessness Week 2018

CHASM Housing would like to thank Maleny locals for their generosity in donating $557 to assist homelessness in Maleny. CHASM donates all funds raised to the MNC emergency accommodation fund, which is used to purchase short term accommodation for homeless people. Thanks to the IGA for allowing us to have our fundraising table in front of the store for that week.
CHASM and MNC are working together on an exciting new initiative for fundraising for Homelessness Week next year – more on this when our plans are further progressed.
