"Science on the Sound" Lecture Series - September 2018
Coastal Studies Institute - 6 PM, September 12, 2018
The Coastal Studies Institute (CSI) is hosting a lecture on the impacts of environmental change on coastal water resources as part of its “Science on the Sound” lecture series. This series, held monthly, highlights information on coastal topics and issues in northeast North Carolina. This month, the program will feature Alex Manda, Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences at East Carolina University (ECU). Manda’s presentation, entitled “The Impacts of Environmental Change on Water Resources in Coastal Communities”, will highlight his research on coastal groundwater resources and the variety of factors that can impact these important assets. The program will be held at 6:00PM on Wednesday, September 12 at the Coastal Studies Institute located at 850 NC 345 in Wanchese, NC. The presentation is free and the public is welcomed and encouraged to attend.
Groundwater resources in coastal communities are on the front lines of human influences and natural ecological processes. Dr. Manda will draw on his experiences working with communities on Bogue Banks to explore threats and opportunities to sustainable groundwater resources management in the Coastal Plain of North Carolina. Dr. Manda’s discussion will include topics such as saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers, stormwater flooding on barrier islands, groundwater quantity and quality, and involvement of citizen scientists in groundwater research opportunities.
This speaker is co-sponsored by the UNC Institute for the Environment’s Outer Banks Field Site.
