Ilios Project Status as of September, 2018

Hello!

We continue to stay "green" and on track in all four quadrants.

This month we are pleased to announce a number of new items: first, we have just released the latest update, v3.54.0. We strongly urge you to update your systems to this release to address a number of issues with the CI upload and other issues noted below.

- Our AWS hosting service continues to grow! If your school is interested in long term savings and stability by hosting your Ilios instance with us, please let us know!

- It's AAMC Curriculum Inventory upload season again. Please note: due to a minor bug, you must update to at least release v3.53.0 prior to uploading your CI report! If your school is not able to update to at least v3.52.0 before the portal closes on 9/30/2018, please contact us ASAP at support@iliosproject.org. We will provide rapid (and free) remediation to your report so that it can be uploaded without incident.

- Technical Note: System Administrators, please note that, beginning with the scheduled release of Ilios v3.56.0 on Friday, October 5, 2018, Ilios will be updating the nature of how configuration settings are set/managed on your Ilios implementation.
In Ilios v3.56.0, we will be deprecating the existing `parameters.yml` file in favor of using system runtime environment variables for setting any Ilios config values that are not explicitly stored in the 'application_config' table of the Ilios database. Most importantly, the database connectivity settings and db user credentials themselves will need to be updated to be set as ENV variables or your Ilios instance will stop working entirely!  Documentation to assist you in any needed conversions can be found at https://github.com/ilios/ilios/blob/master/docs/env_vars_and_config.md.

If you have any questions about this change, please do not hesitate to contact us at support@iliosproject.org for assistance. It is critical that you complete this conversion when you upgrade to the scheduled v3.56.0 release in October in order to accommodate upcoming system improvements. This is only a minor manual adjustment, but a critical one all the same, and we are more than happy to assist you in this process if necessary; just let us know! Again, this change will be occurring with the scheduled October 5, 2018 update to Ilios v3.56.0.

You asked: We delivered

As curricula grow more complex, the review of session information at a glance within the context of a course block grows more and more critical, and the need to see as much as possible in context, on screen, is critical to the ability of faculty and staff to review and manage their data. To this end, we have updated the session management list in Ilios.

The list now uses less screen real estate to expose and display more information, as well as allowing easy expand/collapse controls for one or more (or all) onscreen sessions. Additionally, the ability to edit session data inline, without navigating away from the course management page, provides your team with better control and fewer clicks needed, resulting in less time lost and more productivity.

The Ilios Team

Highlights in this release:
  • API Changes: Updates to v1.34, no breaking changes.
  • Schema Changes: Add values for session instructional notes, session prerequisites; no breaking changes
  • Other Changes: CI calculation display and load updates, housekeeping, improved login.

Please be sure to updates your systems to get the latest, greatest code!

How to Update Your Frontend:

The Ilios frontend is always up-to-date on our content-delivery servers at Amazon S3, but you will need to regularly run a console command on your backend instance in order ensure that your users are seeing the latest version and that they are getting all the latest features and bugfixes. To make sure you users are receiving the latest frontend code at all times, just follow the steps described here:
 https://github.com/ilios/ilios/blob/master/docs/update.md

Though you will probably never need to deploy the Ilios 3 Frontend on your own servers, the source for the frontend code can always be found at https://github.com/ilios/frontend/releases.

The changelog for updates specific to the frontend can be viewed here.
