Old Ways to Do New Things
our latest learning

Sometimes we are tempted to believe that we have all the answers and that our way of doing things is the best. If only we had the tools and materials that we know exist in the US, this would be so much easier/better.
The fact is... not always.
The photo at the top shows the construction of a diaper changing table and creation of a small tub/sink for washing children and things---all formed up and made of concrete--old school style.
One of Darren's first projects to tackle at Christian Academy of Guatemala (CAG) was transforming this space into an early childhood center to support missionary families who need care for their youngest children while they are doing what God has called them to do in their own ministries. It was, and continues to be a great time of growth and encouragement as we see God's hand in motion.
The following photos are good examples of using collaboration and technology to get the job done. Taking a picture of the measurement and sending it to coworkers leaves no room for error--unlike "google translator"! LOL
Spanish is still in progress and Darren starts classes again this month.
He is soooo excited!
The work that Darren is doing at the academy is important because it allows missionary parents to give their children  (Missionary Kids-MKs) and education that is comparable to what they would receive in the US. It can be tough to be a child of a missionary. They have unique challenges.
In a devotional written by Steven Beam, Walk with Me a Few More Steps, he gives this perspective...
You Might be an MK if...
You are thrilled to get a jar of peanut butter as your birthday gift.
You speak 3 languages but can't understand the lyrics of hip hop music.
You aren't sure where "home" is.
You have spoken at more churches than most pastors.
You've seen your photo on the refrigerator of people around the globe.
You play football with a round ball.
You have a passport but not a driver's license.
You have ever shouted "hallelujah" as loud as you could over a Snickers bar.

While these insights may seem humorous, there is truth here. MKs are faced with sacrifices because of their parent's call to the mission field. With ministries like CAG, a good solid education does not have to one of them.
Gwen's teaching year is winding down--just a few more weeks. She has been given the assignment of overseeing this beautiful young lady who takes care of the gardens on campus. It is an easy job because she knows what she is doing and just keeps Gwen informed. English classes are continuing and a great source of enjoyment.
(for Gwen anyway).
Final exams are scheduled for the 1st week in October. Hint-hint: There may be an extra credit point if they know who the catcher is for the St. Louis Cardinals!
With the school year drawing to a close, Gwen will be seeking direction for another ministry to get involved with for the down time between school years. We plan a trip back to the US at the end of October through Thanksgiving but will return to Guatemala for December.
Gwen's daughter, Genna is getting married on October 27th in Denver, CO. and we will be headed to the mid-west and Michigan after the celebration. Please pray for safe travels, good visits and for God to show Gwen where He would like her to invest her time for His kingdom once they return in December until school starts up again after the first of the year.

LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING MANY OF YOU SOON!
