Book[ed] | September 2019 | Vol 3 | Issue 1

Welcome (back) to the iSchool Laboratory Library!

In this issue

The iSchool Library hosted an intern from the Information Technology Academy this summer. See Esmi's photos on the new iSchool Library website!

This is Book[ed].

In September 2017, an intrepid group of library staff decided that there had to be a better way to communicate with iSchool Library patrons than the whiteboard in the hallway. Sure, we have social media, but that's a special place for memes, baby animals, and sunsets over the lake!

Thus, Book[ed] was born as a bi-weekly e-newsletter that hoped to make the iSchool Library space more accessible, especially for online patrons. But bi-weekly was a lot, and staffing in the library made this difficult.

At the end of the spring 2018 semester, the iSchool Library asked for feedback related to this publication. We took a year off to do some soul searching (and hiring!) and really consider the most viable course of action. As a result of this feedback, Book[ed] will arrive at an inbox near you once a month. Some issues may be pretty light, while others may be more robust. We're going to do our best to make this newsletter worth your time and ours.

According to our survey, topics of greatest interest include:
  • Upcoming library and iSchool events and conferences
  • Updates on recent graduates
  • Messages from student organizations
  • Book recommendations
Feel free to review the Book[ed] Survey Summary 2018 in its entirety.

More importantly, though, we want to hear your feedback along the way. If you have questions about library things or there's something super cool you'd like for us to share, let us know!

After-hours access to the iSchool Library

Returning students may recall the thrill of learning about the Secret Keys to the iSchool Library that were available for check-out through the spring 2019 semester. The few students with schedules justright for the mad dash to get a key for the weekend could probably tell you the key they preferred to checkout; it was "their" key.

Now, gone are the days when only a few "in the know" students could check out a key to the library and use the space after-hours. With the upgraded library door comes a schnazzy key card swipe pad.

Here's what you need to do to take advantage of this amenity:
  1. Request access.
  2. Access may take up to 3 business days to become active. You can verify your access with Alison by emailing alison.caffrey@wisc.edu.
  3. Whether you've completed the agreement or not, you are subject to the terms of after-hours library use posted in the library.
I'll sum up the terms of use by saying simply, don't be a jerk and please look out for each other and the library when you're present after-hours. This is no time to gloat to undergraduates that you can get into the library and they can't (neener neener boo boo). You also don't need to serve as a library enforcer. Just let us know if anything seems off and enjoy the best lake view on campus.

Library Updates

It's been a busy year for the iSchool Library! We're extremely excited to help welcome our new online and campus students to the school, and welcome back all returning students.

Over the last year, students may have noticed some changes in the library and library services this semester. In case you missed it or you're just joining us...

  • The UW-Madison General Library System discontinued the use of Library Course Pages for course reserves. All e-reserves prepared by the iSchool Library are found directly in your Canvas courses. Instructors will let you know where to find reserves for their specific courses.
  • Slowly but surely, library facilities are undergoing a face lift. This is an exciting and time-consuming project that we hope vastly improves the security, function, and aesthetics of the space.
  • Library staff began sporting new lanyards and name tags during the fall 2018 semester. (The name tags were designed by 2019 graduate and library staffer Mikaela Fortune!) This is part of our effort to avoid re-enacting the famous Abbott and Costello bit, "Who's on Desk?"
  • In September, we will welcome Megan Adams back to the iSchool as an instructor, advisor, and collections librarian. Megan is a graduate of the iSchool.
We'll continue to keep you updated on changes as they come. If you see something that needs our attention, please don't hesitate to contact us at iSchoolLib@library.wisc.edu.

Have a great semester!
