RCE Severn at the University of Gloucestershire
Global Goals project featured as best practice case study in report to UN

Our community-facing Learning Innovation for the Tomorrow (LIFT) project in Events Management was featured as a case study in best practice as part of the first SDG Accord report – an Annual report to the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.
 
The project supported students to develop and deliver pop up family activities on the global goals as part of the Cheltenham Jazz Festival earlier this year – recording over 800 visitor interactions and engaging over 250 children with the Global Sustainable Development Goals.

Students brighten St. Pauls to build community 


Our Criminology staff and students have been working with St Paul's Road Area Residents Association in Cheltenham, to apply theory and explore sustainability in relation to crime.

Funding from our Learning Innovation for Tomorrow (LIFT) programme helped them organise a litter pick and give out pot plants to brighten the local neighbourhood, helping to reduce crime and improve sense of community.

Starting a plastic free movement 

Plastic Free Communities is a national initiative set up by Surfers Against Sewage. University student Meg Stone has brought this movement to Cheltenham.
 
Meg said: “Rather than just know about the huge impact that plastic pollution has had on the environment I wanted to do something about it.”
 
The Plastic Free Cheltenham group is engaging with businesses across the town. The University is also removing all single use coffee cups from its canteens in response to growing support to reduce waste.

Free course for 16-24 year olds

Earn AQA accreditation, learn transferable skills and improve your health and wellbeing while helping to improve local green spaces for wildlife and the community.

Sessions involve working outdoors completing practical gardening tasks within a team. The course is 'rolling' so there's no start or end date, certificates are gained by attending at least 5 sessions

When: Tuesdays 2-4.30pm

Call for artists 


Artists are invited to submit work in response to the incinerator scheduled to open in Gloucestershire in early 2019, and/or the stubborn use of incinerators to burn waste on a global scale.
 
The exhibition will be located at different sites around Stroud in early February 2019 and will include digital, moving image, textile art, installation, photography, sculpture and painting media.
 
Submission deadline: 15th November 2018

Preparing teachers for global citizenship education: a template 
A new UNESCO  publication provides practical information and tips on how teacher educators and teachers can embed Global Citizenship Education (GCED) into their teaching practices.

It presents a conceptual framework for transformative education, provides examples of creative pedagogies and demonstrates how GCED can be integrated into different subject areas. A wide range of relevant resources is also listed in the publication for further reference.
