NOTES FROM THE STACKS
Collier County Public Library staff are excited to present the first edition of our patron newsletter!

It is our goal on a monthly basis to provide Library patrons with inside information on the various happenings in Collier County’s ten libraries.  Look for upcoming snapshots of each library, staff recognition, volunteer recognition, resources, services, programming, search tips, how-to’s, new title releases and our ever expanding partnerships.

I will occasionally throw in some statistics and long range planning goals to let our readers know where the library has been and where we are going as a public library system.

And watch out for surveys!  The Library is always interested in hearing what you want and need from your public library.  Only through your continued interest, use, support, and opinions can the Collier County Public Library exceed your expectations every day.

So welcome! I invite you to sit back and enjoy the read!

Tanya Williams
Library Director
This summer Collier County Public Library celebrated and challenged our Collier County Residents to participate and vote in the: THE GREAT AMERICAN READ!

What was it all about?  The intent was to spark a national conversation about reading the books that have inspired us throughout our lives. The Library partnered with WGCU, our local PBS affiliation with this reading initiative that also included an eight-part television and online series, which premiered on PBS stations on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at 8pm. Shortly before the launch of the series (the exact date was a secret) a list of the top 100 best-loved books was revealed.

Participants were encouraged to read (or reread) books from the list of 100 best-loved books, vote and share their personal connections to the titles.  Book discussions and talks based on The Great American Read were held at various county library and museum locations. Details of the program are available on the Library website, collierlibrary.org and Facebook, www.facebook.com/colliercountylibrary

WGCU and Collier County Public Library are participating in an event at Gulf Coast Town Center in connection with the Great American Read. It is Sunday, September 9 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at Gulf Coast Town Center.  As part of the celebration, there will be 3 PBS Kids characters – Arthur, Princess Presto from Super Why, Cat in the Hat – and some fun activities.

WGCU is also planning to visit multiple library locations in September to offer live voting on three separate days.  Those library locations, dates and times are as follows:

Thursday, September 13 from 1-3pm at Headquarters
Wednesday, September 19 from 1-3 at South Regional
Wednesday, September 26 from 5-7 at Naples Regional

We hope you’ll join us!  Ultimately, the campaign will highlight the list of America’s favorite works of fiction and ultimately, America’s number one novel.

LIBRARY ON THE GO

How does Collier County Public Library share the Summer Reading Program fun? The 2018 library theme, “Libraries Rock” spread its wings to move some of the library’s resources and amenities to Parks and Recreation summer camp locations!  The goal of this partnership was to take the books to the children and teens of Collier County, particularly those in day camps.

By sharing library resources, the kids had access to library books which prevented the dreaded “summer slide,” a term that refers to academic regression during the summer months.

Coordination between library staff and the kids themselves meant a delivery of fresh books on a regular basis, with many titles chosen by the campers themselves – this insured that reading materials were provided that would engage readers and campers without sacrificing quality.

Campers could win prizes and enter raffles just by participating.  Not only was this educational activity fun, but the library saw a direct increase in summer reading participation through this successful partnership, which will see increased outreach next summer based on the outcomes of this pilot program.

EVERYTHING TEEN

The renovation of the Headquarter Regional Library’s new teen room is underway with fresh purchases of a Playstation, television, games and so much more. The excitement is building for all of the changes and the teens are sure to love them too!

The library is working to create a captivating book collection where there is something for every reader. But if something should be missing, a suggestion box is available for purchase request.

Upcoming programs include: a screening of Avengers: The Infinity Wars, followed by a discussion of the movie. This your chance to share your love for MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) with fellow teens.

There will also be a game night with a large selection of board games, as well as pizza. Lastly, in September, a teen committee may be formed based on interest that will be the voice our teens in the community.

This committee will help to come up with programs, displays, and even title suggestions to incorporate into the teen library. And if this sounds exciting, wait to see what is in store for October!
THIS MONTH IN HISTORY
September 1, 1939 – The Nazi Invasion of Poland Begins

September 2, 1945 – Japan surrenders to the Allies aboard the USS Missouri

World War II officially began and ended in the month of September. While countless factors led to the hostilities, war began in earnest when Hitler’s forces invaded Poland, sparking declarations of war from France and Great Britain.

Almost exactly six years later, Japanese dignitaries boarded the USS Missouri to formally surrender to General MacArthur, bringing an official end to the conflict. These six years would define a generation, and inform policy and culture for decades to come.

The books below include a Great American Read novel, personal narratives of the war, and authoritative historical overviews.
