Student Bar Association: Announcements & Upcoming Elections
SBA officer speeches will be held from 12:00 p.m. - 12:50 p.m.  on Wednesday, September 12, before the first SBA general body meeting in the Student Commons Area. Please stop by to get free food, support your friends, and hear from the candidates for SBA elected positions. Be sure to check out their candidate statements!

SBA general body meetings will be every other Wednesday in 1B from 12:50 p.m. - 1:50 p.m. Our first meeting is on Wednesday, September 12. These meetings are open to the student body and are a great opportunity for you to explore your interest in SBA -- and get more free food. 

If your student organization wishes to inquire about an immediate supplemental funding or a charter request, please email Alex Borovsky to receive the appropriate information. We will hear supplemental funding and charter requests at our first general body meeting on September 12.

SBA President Office Hours are from 12:15 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. every Thursday in room G115a. Stop by if you want to ask any questions about Emory Law, your student organization, or just to say hey to our awesome president, Nicole Elmurr!

Pass/Fail Deadline This Week
Students eligible to select the Pass/Fail option need to note that the NEW DEADLINE to submit their request is WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, at 11:59PM.

Eligible students should use OPUS to make their Pass/Fail selection

It is the student's responsibility to know the Pass/Fail policy and the allotted number of credits they can use for this option. 

The Law Registrar will review the submissions and notify any student whose request cannot be processed. Any request that exceeds the allotted credit limit will be denied and reversed in OPUS.

The Pass/Fail policy can be found in the Student Handbook on page 38.
Call for Applications for Emory's Giles Sutherland Rich Moot Court Team
The American Intellectual Property Society (AIPLA) conducts the Giles Sutherland Rich (GSR) Moot Court competition every year. The competition generally involves one or more issues of patent law and may involve trademark, copyright, and litigation issues. Teams prepare 30-page appellant and appellee briefs. Teams also participate in an oral argument competition. 

Emory’s GSR Moot Court program is run by the IP Society’s GSR Moot Court Committee in conjunction with Emory faculty advisors. Each year, Emory sends two teams with two students per team to compete – submitting briefs in early February and competing in the Atlanta Regional oral argument competition in March. Competing team members are eligible to earn one Pass/Fail Credit in Spring. 

All rising 2Ls and 3Ls are invited to apply for Emory's GSR Moot Court 2018-19 team. We are currently seeking competing and alternate team members. Alternate team members will read and provide feedback on written briefs and act as bench judges during oral arguments practice. In return, alternate team members are guaranteed a spot on a competing team for the following season.

Written application materials: Your application must include the following:
• Law school resume 
• Statement of interest (one paragraph)
• Writing sample – preferably a legal brief (name removed)
• Team preference (competing, alternate, either)

The written application materials deadline is on Friday, September 21 at 11:59 p.m. Applications should be submitted to Kimberlee Thompson.

An oral advocacy exercise is tentatively scheduled for the week of October 22, 2018.

Selection Process: 
GSR Moot Court team members will be selected based on a combination of enrollment and satisfactory performance in intellectual property law courses; other experience or interest in intellectual property law; experience in moot court or related courses, if any; evidence of excellence in writing; evidence of commitment to representing the school in an external competition; and oral advocacy skills.
Student Volunteer Opportunities 
Georgia Lawyers for the Arts (GLA), with support and consultation with California Lawyers for the Arts, will present The Georgia Art for Justice Forum to expand the role that art can play in addressing mass incarceration and criminal justice reform in Georgia. As part of this forum, GLA will hold a symposium at Emory Law on Friday, September 28, including panel discussions and facilitated dialogues related to these issues.  Students are needed to volunteer throughout the day to assist with registration, directing attendees, and other tasks as needed.  To volunteer, email Rita Sheffey with "Art of Justice Volunteer" on the subject line, indicating the times that day you are available to assist.


The Appellate Judges Education Institute (AJEI) is teaming up with the 11th Circuit Appellate Practice Institute for AJEI's annual meeting in Atlanta November 8-11, 2018 at the Marriott Marquis in downtown Atlanta.  The event will be attended by state appellate judges from around the country as well as 11th Circuit Court of Appeals judges, lawyers, and staff attorneys.  Information about the conference is available at this link.» Student volunteers are needed to serve as timekeepers during programming sessions, to help organize a race, and for other tasks as needed.  To volunteer, email Rita Sheffey with "AJEI Volunteer" on the subject line, indicating the days and times you are available to volunteer.
2018 EPIC Conference

Mark your calendars! The 2018 EPIC Conference will take place at Emory University School of Law on Saturday, October 6, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The EPIC Conference is a great opportunity for students, faculty, and attorneys in the Atlanta community to learn about an issues in public interest work. Event attendance satisfies student the conference requirement for EPIC grants applications. CLE credit is also available for attorneys. Lunch will be provided for all who attend.

2018 Kagan Horowitz Practice Society Premiere
Please join us for the Kagan Horowitz Practice Society Premiere on Wednesday, September 26, at 5:30 p.m. in the Student Commons. This annual event is your chance to “window shop” the many practice societies and talk with practicing attorneys in each of these areas. Hors-d'oeuvres and beverages will be served throughout the evening.

Public International Law Career Panel

Unpaid Internships with Judge Gail Tusan
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Gail Tusan is seeking both law students (2L or 3L) and recent graduates to work with her on a volunteer (unpaid) basis, for approximately 10-15 hours per week through the end of the semester (students) or the year (graduates).  

Please submit a resume, a five-page writing sample, and email expressing interest to Judge Tusan's judicial assistant, Harriett Ford. Applications are currently being accepted until September 27.
