Invitation to Worship
“Why don’t pastors tell people this stuff?” This was a question posed by one of my classmates in Seminary in our class on the New Testament. We had just learned something that was challenging for many of us in the room, especially those who had grown up believing that the Bible was a essentially a gift that was delivered from the heavens. In the midst of shocked silence, my friend asked why he hadn’t learned some of these things in nearly four decades of attending church.
My friend, like many of us, had been told that the Bible says all sorts of things. The hard thing is this: it doesn’t actually say a lot of it. Even though I’ve had several copies of the Bible in my home for my entire life, it took a seminary education for me and many of my friends to figure out what it really says (and doesn’t say).
This Sunday, we’re starting a new series: “What the Bible really says.”
Whether you are an avid bible scholar, or someone who tends to avoid the text at all costs, this series will help you to find newness in the text, and perhaps even a renewed ability to engage with the text and your faith.
I really hope you can join us on Sunday at 5 p.m. We are celebrating Homecoming as summer comes to a close and our church community kicks into a new gear. We will celebrate students and teachers with a Blessing of the Backpacks, and hear an update on our small groups. We’ll have food and community, and a chance to get better connected as a community. You won’t want to miss it!
Grace and Peace,
Rev. Jasper Peters
