2017 ASSIP Students Team with Local Veteran-Owned Company to Bring Invention to Market
During Mason’s 2017 Aspiring Scientists Summer Internship Program (ASSIP), five students developed a prototype for a high-tech knee sleeve that will aid in the rehabilitation of knee injuries. The “FIRST (Family of Intelligent Rehabilitative Smart Technology) Sleeve” is comprised of embedded sensors and microelectronics that can effectively monitor range of motion, inflammation, pressure, swelling, acceleration and other telling knee barometers.
Earlier this year, Manassas-based Phase II, a veteran-owned company, licensed the FIRST Sleeve with the goal of its rapid commercial development following clinical validation over the next two years.
Mason’s ASSIP program was established in 2007 to provide high school and undergraduate students access to real-world, hands-on research. The program emphasizes creativity and innovation in science and technology.

Mason Researcher Part of Team Investigating Remedies to Deadly Virus
Team Receives 5-year, $2.5 Million Award
from U.S. Department of Defense
The Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) can cause long-term neurological problems, and even death. The disease was first identified in Venezuela, infects people throughout South America each year, and now has reached the Florida Everglades.
Kylene Kehn-Hall, an associate professor in Mason’s School of Systems Biology and the National Center for Biodefense and Infectious Diseases, is collaborating with Jonathan Dinman from the University of Maryland and Jonathan Jacobs from QIAGEN, a worldwide provider of molecular technologies and genomics analysis solutions. The team hopes to lay the foundation for an eventual therapeutic treatment to VEEV, by identifying the pathogens’ pathways to brain neurons, and developing a solution that prevents the virus’s growth.
