From Our CIPCF President
Dear MIP Families:

NiHao and a warm welcome from CIPCF! We hope you all had a restful summer. Can’t believe the new school

year is underway!

As we get ready for another new school year, I would like to invite you to participate in our events and volunteer your time and share your experiences and talents to contribute to this awesome community. I truly believe that

you will get out of this program what you put into it. The more you contribute and/or participate, the more rewarding your experiences will be.

There are many ways to participate. For example, you should come to our general meetings. Our first meeting will be held on September 4, at 6:30 PM, Azevada library. If you can’t make it, at least watch the streamline on CIPCF Parent Chat -- speaking of which, if you have Facebook, you should join CIPCF Parent Chat, a private parent group where we shared information, pictures, and streamline our meetings.

Please also participate by signing your kids up for our many social/cultural/academic events and activities.  Better yet, volunteer to help in our events and activities!

We already have many social events planned for this fall --- our welcome picnic will be held on Saturday, September 8, at 4:00 PM, and our 2nd annual moon festival and poster contest will be held on Friday, September 21, at Azevada.

The theme of our poster contest this year is “family reunion”.  We will need kids to sing in performances and submit their original artworks for the contest. More details will come via emails and/or posted on Parent Chat.

You can also help our program by voting in this November’s elections! This is a very important year for us. One of our strongest supporters on the School Board, Larry Sweeney, is up for re-election. Larry has been a long-time supporter of our program, and he and Dr. Shao really helped us with all the challenges we had in connection with the seventh grade launch last year.

We also need to pay attention to the seat being vacated by Dr. Shao, who is leaving the school board to run for city council this fall. Dr. Shao is also a strong supporter of our program. It is imperative that we find someone equally supportive to replace him.  Therefore, on Friday, October 12, 6-8 pm, we are organizing a forum where the candidates running for the school board this fall will come to speak to us and answer our questions. We encourage all parents to come.

Sometime in October Math Club will also return to Azevada. This very successful program needs lots of parent volunteers. So if you are interested in signing your kids up, you should also consider volunteering as a coach.  Later in Spring we will consider launching a Writing Club to help our kids with English writing. If you are interested in such a program, please let us know!

Finally, you can participate by contributing your money! We will launch our third annual direct donation campaign on November 1st.  Our goal this year is to raise at least $35,000. We will need every MIP family to contribute a little to reach this fundraising goal.
We wish everyone a very productive year ahead and look forward to your support.  Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at officers@cipcf.org.

Please know that questions and suggestions are always welcome!

From Our CIPCF Trustee President
Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! In our 9th year now, we have approximately 300 Mandarin Immersion Program (MIP) students in Kindergaren through the 8th grade at Azevada Elementary and Hopkins Jr. High. We are primed and ready to keep growing too!

The CIPCF trustees and officers have been working hard over the past several years to make the program even bigger and better. We finally have an MIP advocate in the FUSD district office. Last year's 5th grade Mandarin teacher, Huang LaoShi, accepted a newly created Teacher on Special Assignment position overseeing the program, leading curriculum development and offering her experience and mentorship to the MIP and district office staff.

We have also been working closely with the school board for the opportunity to expand our program both at the Elementary school level and also into High School. The entire district is constrained by a lack of space, not enough money, and a growing student population. Even given these obstacles, we are hopeful that we will be able to start a 3rd kinder class and offer additional Mandarin learning opportunities through grades 9-12.

Finally,  there are two open school board positions on the ballot in the upcoming November election.

Larry Sweeney is the longest serving member, running for the privilege to serve his 5th term on the board. Larry was one of three strong advocates of our program (along with Ivy Wu and Lily Mei) on the five member board and was instrumental in the creation of the Mandarin Immersion Program. He has been an even stronger proponent of our program over the past 9 years.

Dr. Yang Shao joined the school board 4 years ago and has worked very closely with CIPCF and Larry in helping us get the middle school expansion up and running at Hopkins. He also volunteered his time to read and evaluate Chinese text books for our classrooms, as the district did not have anyone able to perform that task. Dr. Shao has decided not to run for re-election to the school board, instead opting to run for the Fremont City Council in district 4. We our grateful to Dr. Shao and wish him success in his new adventure.

CIPCF and Azevada PTA will be co-sponsoring a Townhall meeting of School Board candidates on Friday, October 12th from 6-8pm. It will be advertised to the entire Kennedy High School attendance area, offering everyone in the Azevada community the opportunity to meet the candidates. I strongly urge and encourage all of you to attend this meeting to ask questions and discuss the issues that concern our schools and our children. CIPCF has benefited from great support from Larry and Yang over the years. We need to make certain that our program's unique concerns will continue to be considered with equity and fairness.

Summer Read-A-Thon

We hope that everyone had a great summer vacation! We also hope that your student(s) has read a LOT of books and raised some money to help support the effort to create curriculum materials for the 7th and 8th grade immersion students at Hopkins. This will be the material that ALL of our MIP students at Azevada will be using when they are in the MIP in middle school.

Please turn in the pledge sheet(s) to the homeroom teacher by Friday, September 7th.  If you have misplaced your pledge sheet, you can find it HERE. Please make checks payable to CIPCF.

Everyone who turns in a pledge sheet will receive a SuperHero bookmark and a BOGO (buy one get one free)  coupon to Ritas of Fremont (courtesy of the store owners).

There is a brand new Amazon Fire HD 8 Tablet waiting for the MIP student who raises the most money!

And remember… CIPCF will match the first $2500 raised! So PLEASE be generous.

We will announce the Amazon Fire winner the week of September 10th.

FUSD School Board Townhall
October 12, Azevada Multi-Purpose Room, 6-8 PM
Be an informed voter this November and come out to support CIPCF and the Mandarin Immersion Program as we host a FUSD School Board Townhall. This will be an opportunity for you to listen to the candidates, learn about their views and ask the questions that most concerns you and your student.
Q&A

An Interview with Chang-Lynn Tan
Getting to know a MIP 8th Grader and member of the Hopkins Jr. High School Band
This is the second in a Questions and Answer series. In this issue we profile an 8th grade Mandarin Immersion Program student who was one of 24 students in our "Pioneer" MIP class. We asked Chang-Lynn Tan about her experience in being part of the Hopkins Jr. High band.

What attracted you to join band? And, what prior music experience do you need?

I started out as a beginner on flute last Fall, with prior piano experience.

What attracted me to band is the band instructor. Mr. Gregory Conway, the band and orchestra teacher, is highly experienced leading Hopkins’ music groups to winning numerous awards at festivals.

In a short amount of time, with a good private lesson teacher, I was able to keep up and even play pieces that were slightly more advanced than the band pieces. This year, I learned more about music than I did in my previous 4 years of playing the piano.

How are you juggling homework, being an MIP student and band?

I have to manage my time carefully because I participate in many after-school sports and extracurricular activities. Aside from band as an elective, I chose Mandarin Language Arts as well. At Hopkins, if you want to take two electives, you have to take zero period, which means PE at 7:22 every morning.

Do you have a favorite memory from your first year that you can share with us?

This school year, the group I was in, Concert Band, received a score of Unanimous Superior at the California Music Education Association(CMEA), which is the highest rating a group could score at a music festival. On top of that, at the Music in the Parks festival, Concert Band received second place for AA middle school bands.

Near the end of the year, around May, the intermediate/beginner band and intermediate orchestra are fortunate enough to participate in TWO music festivals, the ones mentioned above. For the Music in the Parks festivals, the award ceremony is held in Great America, which means we get to go around Great America for a couple of hours before the award ceremony. The advanced bands and orchestra get to go to Anaheim, and roam around Disneyland for 3-4 days.

What advice do you have for younger students who may be interested in joining band?
There are also many studies involved, stating how much more successful students in band than normal students, and how much more likely they will be selected by colleges. Hopkins Junior High offers one of the best music programs in the East Bay, and hopefully, you won’t pass up the opportunity!

There are also two summer music programs that Mr. Conway conducts, one at Hopkins, and one at Castro Valley. These two programs allow you to brush up on your musical skills over the summer, while playing at a slightly more advanced level.
