The iPad has changed the definition of screen time. In the past, screen time was utilized to identify how much TV a person watched in a day. When computers became more prevalent in homes, screen time was expanded primarily to teenagers and adults since infants and toddlers typically couldn’t manipulate a mouse and keyboard.

With the introduction of iPads in 2008, and touch screen access with no accessories needed, screen time then increased for all age spans. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that children younger than 18 months do not have exposure to any screens. However, they say while children who are 2 and older can be safely exposed to screens, their time should be limited to no more than one hour per day. Therefore, the screen time that children receive should be valuable and worthwhile. There are many apps available through ABLE Tech that provide the opportunity for learning.  Some apps that have multiple teaching opportunities include Peek-A-Boo barn, I Hear Ewe, Toys Jigsaw Puzzle, Abby Basic Skills-Preschool, and Elmo’s Monster Maker. These apps can be used for early literacy development, fine motor development, visual discrimination, hearing discrimination, and overall language skills.
