Conservation News

MAJOR LEGISLATION THAT AFFECTS ALMOST EVERY CITIZEN

FARM BILL UPDATE/ACTION
With respect to conservation, the 2018 Farm Bill bill is critical for grassland birds, many species of which have experienced an 80% decline over the past few decades.
The U.S. Senate and House have voted to send their respective versions of the bill to conference and have announced their conferees (47 in the House and 9 in the Senate). Conferees will be crafting a final Farm Bill, drawing upon the House and Senate versions.
The only conferee from Missouri is U.S. Representative Vicki Hartzler; if you live in her district, reaching out to her offices is very important. In Kansas it's Roger Marshall. Even if you don’t live in their districts, it's still important to reach out to your U.S. Representative, and ask them to convey a message to your Congressmen and Senators , as well as asking them to send your message to conferees from the Senate.
Actions to take:
1. Call or email your U.S. Representative and Senators and convey these specific requests. Find your U.S. Representative and U.S. Senators' contact information here.
Here are the key requests (details about each one here):
* Support full funding for the conservation title in the 2018 Farm Bill, with no cuts to the 10-year baseline.
* Support increasing the minimum amount of funds within the Environmental Quality Incentives Program required for wildlife habitat conservation practices annually from 5 percent to 10 percent.
* Support a strengthened and expanded Sodsaver provision in the final Farm Bill.
* Oppose anti-environmental riders to the Farm Bill.
* Support the provision in the Senate version removing barriers within the crop insurance program for farmers who want to adopt conservation practices such as cover crops.
* Support an increased CRP (Conservation Reserve Program) cap that won't come at the expense of high quality practice or interest in the program.
* Protect the linkage between conservation compliance and crop insurance subsidies, and oppose any efforts to weaken wetland compliance.
2. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper and urge other citizens to also contact their members of Congress. A sample letter can be found here.
3. We work with Missouri Prairie Foundation (MPF) and National Wildlife Federation (NWF) on Farm Bill advocacy. You can help also by signing on to the letter that NWF will send to Farm Bill Conferees. For more info visit this excellent resource page by our friends at the MPF.
Thank you for caring!

Field Trips

TO VARIOUS KANSAS AND MISSOURI LOCATIONS

Burroughs field trips are free to Audubon members and the public, and people of any age or level of experience are welcome to participate! Any trip may involve walking on a variety of terrain and surfaces, but some trips will be more strenuous than others. Trip leaders can advise you of the physical activity involved. Since we visit a number of wild areas and habitats, we respectfully ask that your pets not accompany us on the trail. If they're not given to vocal excitement, pets in vehicles are fine.

Thursday, September 20 - 7:00 a.m.
Longview Lake -
We will check a couple of locations for terns, gulls, southbound migrating warblers, vireos, flycatchers, and whatever else we can find on this local morning trip.

Saturday, October 13 - 6:30 a.m.
Hillsdale Lake -
The Franklin’s Gull migration through eastern Kansas is a spectacle unique to the region. Join us as we scan the lake at first light to count Franklin’s Gulls and check the State Park for waterfowl, gulls, raptors, sparrows, and whatever else is around.

Wednesday, October 17 - 8:00 a.m.

Jerry Smith Park Fall Bird Census - We will meet at the trailhead parking lot at the top of the ridge and search this largely undeveloped KCMO city park for southbound migrants and year-round residents.

October 20th & 21st
Hitchcock Nature Center - Honey Creek, IA
- Located approximately 15 miles northeast of Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie County Conservation's Hitchcock Nature Center is one of the premier fall Hawk Watch locations in the Midwest. As an official Hawk Watch location they have a volunteer counting passing raptors atop their 45-foot tower, as well as a raptor banding station and hiking trails.

Saturday, October 27 – 6:30 a.m.
Clinton Lake Outlet Park - We’ll walk a field searching for Le Conte’s Sparrow, Nelson’s Sparrow, Marsh and Sedge Wrens, and other southbound migrants and winter residents.
