"Dad, I feel like I'm falling behind," my son Matthew says over the phone from his apartment in Jacksonville.
"You're doing fine, son," I say in my most confident voice,"You've been through a lot and you are in a good place right now. Good job, nice apartment, a gal that realizes you are special. You have so many options available to you at this point in your life." He is twenty-seven years old.
Like so many of us that are on social media, all we see is the good times, the happy faces looking back at us from some exotic locations, dinners out, shows attended. All magic moments that give the appearance of the perfect family, career, life. All of us candidates for a staring role on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. But, is this really the case?
When you meet the people face to face you get the real picture. The lady that has photos of traveling around the country, going out to fancy restaurants but has a hard time doing day to day tasks because of a debilitating medical condition. The other who travels worldwide from Thailand to India but that lost her husband to a kidney failure, both are in their fifties.
These are the stories you do not hear but are the ones that should be told. The hardships overcome. The triumphs of spirit that inspire us to realize that no matter how heartbreaking the situation, they make the best they can of what life has dealt them.
Fear is what keeps us from sharing these stories. Fear of not having the ability to effectively communicate or even worse telling your story effectively to the point of ostracizing yourself from your friends, relatives or co-workers. Asking yourself "What will people think?" and finding fear in that answer.
I am grateful for the band of Spartans, "Impact Venture Capitalists", that encourage, support and yes, sometimes constructively criticise the daily ponderings that I distribute.
I encourage you to share your story all of us have a unique life experience to tell. Don't be afraid of being judged. As the song goes:
