With less than four weeks to go until the All-Energy Conference and Exhibition opens its doors, the Australian Technologies Competition will be there to spotlight Australia's most promising clean tech companies in 2018, who are competing for the top spot in the Smart Cities and New Energy Award Categories. As part of this day-long event, a partner connect session will be held in the morning, followed by presentations by past ATC winners who are invited back to the stage. This year's clean tech finalists will then make their pitches in front of our Judges and audience, leaving two companies to be crowned as the 2018 winners! Our team of 11 Judges are still hard at work determining which entrants continue to stand out as the having the greatest global potential. ATC congratulates semi finalist Hydrox Technologies on their recent accolade, as co-founders Mark and Rob Trenchard were both named one of Queensland's top 20 entrepreneurs under 40 a few short weeks ago.

Third generation plastic manufacturers Mark Trenchard and brother Rob are founders of Brisbane-based ag-tech start-up Hydrox Technologies. They sell 800 tonnes of plastic mulch a year that is used by small crop farmers to preserve soil moisture and warmth. It was named one of the best new products at the World Ag Expo earlier this year.
Arriving in Australia as teenagers, the brothers studied business at University of Queensland before going into the family plastics business. They later set out on their own, making plastic bags for the aquarium industry to transport tropical fish. "We designed a round-bottomed bag that did not squash the fish when they were transported," 39-year old Mark says.
Looking around for cheap machinery after the 2011 flood ripped through their factory, they chanced upon an old plastic extrusion machine. Through trial and error, they produced a ground cover which used 25 percent less plastic than other mulch, and shrank when exposed to sunlight, giving better yields.

Capricorn Power's vision is to create a new, sustainable source of electricity, manufactured in Geelong and exported globally.

ATC semi finalist Inkerz recently visited Keystone, Colorado where they attended the conference of its partner Canvas. Canvas is one of several leading learning management system (LMS) providers and currently the biggest LMS in the US with 30 million users. Inkerz representatives report the following key outcomes following the conference:
- Inkerz was announced as one of four inaugural booster partners of Canvas
- Inkerz receives priority access to all Canvas customers (30 million users)
- Access to one of Canvas's major investors - a US based large Edtech fund
Above all, Inkerx reported that this trip enabled the team to validate their product, sales strategy and messages. James Street, Global Business Development & Partner Manager of Inkerz said: "We received an overwhelming repose. The Canvas community were crying out for the ability to enable handwriting into the Canvas LMS. This enthusiasm was validated by orders and the creation of a very solid sales pipeline of 100 institutions."

Cogito named semi finalist in the Australian Defence Landforces 2018 Innovation Awards

Congratulations to Cyber semi finalist Cogito, on being selected as a semi finalist in the Australian Defence Landforces 2018 Innovation Awards. Although not a winner in this year's round, they received recognition and publicity surrounding their Cyber security platform, Jellyfish.

News from our Growth Centre Partners // METS Ignited

Queensland based METS Ignited recently named three companies that have been selected to take part in the METStech Passport. The METStech Passport is the first of its kind between Australia and Chile and involves sending Australian scale-ups to Chile for a two-week immersion in the country's mining innovation ecosystem. The successful applicants are Conveyor Products and Solutions (CPS), Minnovare (2018 Australian Technologies Competition semi finalist) and Matrix Materials. The companies will gain unprecedented exposure to the resources sector, flying to Chile in October for meetings and site visits with mining companies, government, industry and universities in the region. The METStech Passport is a ticket to new opportunities in the LATAM region for METS companies. It is a joint initiative between METS Ignited, Austrade and Fundacion Chile's Open Innovation program, Expande.
