Dear Indivisible Friends,

There are 58 days to the 2018 midterms. We are living in a Vichy-like “democracy” where collaborators in this crisis try to excuse their inaction with confidential statements to Bob Woodward and anonymous letters to the New York Times assuring us that they can control the mayor of "Crazytown" while also pushing through their political agenda.  What can you do? See below.

Don’t tell me your vote doesn’t matter… and if you thought elections don’t matter, I hope these last two years have corrected that impression.

President Barack Obama, September 7, 2018

ISB FOCUS: Andrew Janz CA-22

Andrew Janz, 34, a deputy district attorney in Fresno County is in a battle to unseat Devin Nunes, who has been called “Trump’s stooge” by the Sacramento Bee. In his 16 years in Congress, Nunes (Chair of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence) has not faced a political challenge even remotely close to this one.

Nunes’s hold on the 22nd district, a San Joaquin Valley territory that includes Tulare, Visalia, and parts of Fresno, appears to be weakening. This is a district where registered Republican voters outnumber Democrats by 10 percentage points and Trump won with 51% of the vote in 2016. Significantly, Nunes hasn’t held a town hall since 2010, when a public discussion of the Affordable Care Act went badly for him. Protest vigils are held by constituents every Tuesday at his Visalia office, and the the influential Sabato’s Crystal Ball no longer regards Nunes's seat as “safe.” Adding to his troubles are reports of extravagant campaign spending on steak dinners, limo rides, and thousands of dollars worth of basketball tickets to watch the Boston Celtics.

The predominantly agricultural district is 48% Latino, although less than 29% of that population is registered to vote. The most up-for grabs-votes are in Tulare County, the nation's top milk-producing county. There thanks to Trump’s trade wars, Tulare’s dairy farmers have been hit with retaliatory tariffs imposed by China and others.

Janz is running on local issues like agricultural tariffs and water infrastructure, as well as Nunes's identification with Trump and his well publicized obstruction of the Mueller investigation. Janz, who is calling for a work visa program to help local farmers facing labor shortages, also makes clear how Trump’s immigration policy hurts the San Joaquin economy.

In addition to receiving relatively favorable local coverage, Janz has caught the attention of national media outlets like MSNBC. His media ads stress his local roots, his work as a prosecutor, and his outsider status. He has also picked up strong endorsements from Senators Kamala Harris, Dianne Feinstein, and Elizabeth Warren, and from legendary activists like  Dolores Huerta. Progressive groups like Indivisible, End Citizens United, Moms Demand Action Gun Sense, and Planned Parenthood have rallied round.

Can Janz flip the 22nd? With a little help, we think he can!

Sample Written Script:

I live in California and strongly oppose the proposed withdrawal of California’s ability to set pollution standards that are more stringent than federal standards. This ability has been in effect for 48 years, has never been withdrawn before. The state’s unique pollution problems are the result of geography and the movement of goods from California’s ports through the state by truck and rail to consumers across the country. It is not unreasonable for the rest of the country to support the previously issued standards which take California’s needs into account, since the country benefits from receiving the goods transported through the state.

The US transportation sector is the largest contributor of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the country, and vehicles are the largest source of air pollution. EPA’s duty to protect public health and welfare means taking urgent steps to reduce vehicle emissions, including GHGs, to the greatest extent possible. Failing to take the strongest possible action now will ensure escalated global warming and major loss of life and health. Global warming has already set in motion changes that will further accelerate warming. Increasing emissions cannot be justified based on science, cost, or available technology.

IMMIGRATION

4. Stop the Indefinite Detention of Immigrant Children

On Thursday, the Trump administration announced it is seeking to jail migrant children with their families indefinitely. Detaining children for more than 20 days is illegal, but the administration says it will terminate the Flores Settlement Agreement that has governed the detention of migrant children since 1997, claiming it would issue new regulations that “satisfy the basic purpose” of the Flores settlement.

Sample Written Script: I strongly protest the Trump Administration’s plans to terminate the Flores Settlement Agreement. It typically takes several weeks for asylum seekers to pass a credible fear screening, and they can be detained even after passing such a screening — meaning that the new regulation being proposed by the Administration would ultimately result in families being held for months or possibly even years. The proposed regulations would also allow for the detention of families in facilities that have not been formally approved for licenses, thus reducing standards for care of children and families in immigration detention.  This proposed change imposes unconscionable hardships on all immigrant children and families seeking asylum; people who have committed no crimes and who only seek protection in the United States. It is a grotesque abuse of human rights.

Another plug for the weekly Pen Connection, a group of politically motivated locals who regularly use Indivisible’s guide in penning letters and signs. Write or make mail art to whomever you want – it feels good and is tangible action.

This week the Pen Connection sent beautiful postcards in support of Katie Hill's campaign to take the usually red Congressional district in the Simi Valley, Lancaster, Antelope Valley area.  These are our neighbors and the race is extremely close.

And the Pen Connection recently met the goal of almost 300 cards to kids in foster centers on the Mexican side of the border.  On Sept. 15, our awesome friends at the Immigration Advocacy Collaborative will deliver them to the Mexican Consulate, along with a box-truck full of donated clothes and toys.  A great accomplishment!
