Wigeon Portrait
By: Debbie Jordan
The beginning of October to a bird photographer means that very soon we will be photographing migratory birds wintering in the area. The Chesapeake Bay watershed lies within the Atlantic Flyway, one of four main routes for migratory birds in the United States. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries hosts about one million migratory birds each winter. Here you will find a variety of ducks, swans, and geese that winter over in the area. I look forward with great anticipation to seeing the many different ducks, hearing the sound of tens of thousands of snow geese, and observing the swans during the winter. If you love nature like I do, plan now to visit an area wildlife refuge or the shores of the Chesapeake Bay to see the many varieties of birds that pass through the area during the fall and winter months.

The above photo of a male American Wigeon was taken this past February along the shores of the Choptank River in Cambridge, MD. The male Wigeon has such beautiful markings, and his bill looks as if he dipped it in an inkwell. The markings of the female Wigeon are much more plain, but she still has the black tip on her bill.
Down The Valley
Down The Valley

West Virginia is an amazing place to see fall colors. This photo was taken in a previous year at Lindy Point inside Blackwater Falls State Park, WV. Lindy Point is down a short ~0.5 mile fairly flat and easy trail head. At the end of the trail there is a small wooden deck with great views down the valley. The view in this picture faces west so it is a great place for a sunset shot if there are not too many clouds - like on this day.
Foothills Parkway Gold
Foothills Parkway Gold
By: Benjamin DeHaven

Foothills Parkway Gold was taken near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in autumn of a previous year. This image was taken with a D7100 at 16mm, f/16, ISO 100 and a 1/2-second exposure. I did not use a polarizing filter even though the leaves might have become more saturated with a filter. However, using a filter with the wide angle lens I was using can cause uneven blues in the sky. This image was taken at sunset, and I loved the way the sunbeam shone in and illuminated the valley which was full of autumn color. I chose a 2:1 crop because there was not much going on in the sky to draw interest. The sky was kind of boring so I cropped some of the sky out. Like 95% of my landscape images, this was taken on a tripod using a shutter release cable to eliminate any camera shake.

So get out there and capture some fall color and migrating birds!
