EVENTS

Tuesday September 25, 2018 Clean Energy Jobs Lobby Day St. Mark's Lutheran Church and Oregon State Capitol 8:30 am - 3 pm Attend all or part.
Renew Oregon and 350 Salem OR invite you to join with us on Tuesday Sept 25 to provide support for Clean Energy Jobs and Justice during the Interim Committee days at the Oregon Legislature.  Choose any or all of these activities:

1. 8:30 am at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 790 Marion St NE, Salem Map , for a light breakfast, a presentation about the Clean Energy Jobs Bill and advocacy workshop.

2. 10 am-Noon or after 2 pm Meet in the Capitol with your state legislators to share your support for the bill.  You don’t have to be an “expert” to express your views nor do we expect you to lead the visit. We’ll help you understand the basics and provide accompaniment.
Please contact Hans West (westh3@gmail.com) for pre-scheduled appointment time and where to meet your constituent group unless you will be going from the church. Tell Hans  your state senator and representative. You can find them here by entering your address: https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/FindYourLegislator/leg-districts.html

3. From Noon to 2 PM we will attend a hearing of the Joint Interim Committee on Carbon Reduction. With a sizable turn out, we can show legislators just how strongly we support efforts to reduce Oregon’s greenhouse gas emissions and bring a just transition to a greener, cleaner economy.

If you want to participate in 1, 2 or 3 of these events, please RSVP email 350 Salem OR member Hans West, the co-chair of our State Legislative Action Group (SLAG), at westh3@gmail.com. Please indicate which events you can attend if you can’t make all three.

TAKE ACTION
Jordan Cove /Coos Bay LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) Export Terminal and Pacific Connector Pipeline. Over 42,000 comments were submitted to the Oregon Dept.of Environmental Quality and US Army Corps of Engineers by the August 20 deadline!!!

Thanks to everyone who sent comments in to tell DEQ & ACE
No LNG - No Pipeline - No Fracked Gas in Oregon

There will be other opportunities to comment and rally  against this project as the permit processes develop.  Stay tuned and we'll keep you informed.

Why Should Salem Care About the  Jordan Cove LNG Terminal and Pipeline?  Check out the Guest Opinion in Salem Weekly by 350 Salem OR member Laurie Dougherty here.

Kalama Methanol Refinery

After the defeat of coal, oil and LNG terminals on the Columbia, this project would be another insult to the Columbia, bringing fracked gas to be refined in Kalama, WA to produce methanol for shipment to China for manufacturing plastics.  The first Environmental Impact Statement was overturned by a state hearings board for neglecting to cover the climate change impacts of this energy intensive project. An analysis by the  Stockholm Environmental Institute indicates that these impacts would be very large.

Jasmine Zimmer-Stuckey of Columbia Riverkeeper recently pointed out another good reason to stop this project:  the world is already awash in plastic waste and China's decision to drastically reduce imports of recycled plastic for reprocessing means it will only get worse.

Comments are being taken now on the new Environmental Impact Statement.  Columbia Riverkeeper has more information and links for submitting comments here.

IN SOLIDARITY
Oregonians United against Profiling
Campaign to Defeat Measure 105.

Measure 105* would repeal Oregon's 31-year-old Sanctuary law which prohibits Oregon state and local resources from being used to enforce immigration law.  Repealing this statute would open the door to racial and ethnic profiling.  Get involved by checking out the Campaign website at the link above and endorsing the Campaign.

*Measure 105 was Initiative Petition 22 (IP 22) before it got on the November ballot.

Poor People's Campaign
350.org has endorsed the Poor People's Campaign "because it lifts up the voices and deepens the leadership of those most affected by systemic racism, poverty, the war economy, and ecological devastation and it is working towards building unity across movements.

At this time of intensifying political, economic, and moral crisis, with the lives of the most vulnerable under vicious attack, people in growing numbers around the country are fighting back for their lives, communities and deepest values. And we are deeply committed to supporting the struggles of the most vulnerable and standing in solidarity with these communities...Any actions against the fossil fuel industry, for climate justice, and a fossil free world that 350 groups organize will be incorporated as moral revival action. In order for your actions to be part of this important effort you will need to connect with the local PPC chair in your state. Here is the list of state chairs. If you have trouble getting in touch with a Chair you can email Laurel Ashton at: laurel@poorpeoplescampaign.org.
