September 2018

Welcome to a bumper edition of your local community e-news.

The last month has been very busy out in the community and the month ahead will see even more community events!

The Sandgate Pool has re-opened once again for the summer season. The last closure will be the last time the pool will close over the winter season with the heated indoor pool progressing towards a 2019 completion. The 50m pool and aqua play area is now open with brand new shade, seating and toilet facilities now open too.

I have a number of petitions on local issues with Council at the moment. Please take a minute to sign these petitions and make sure you confirm your signature via the email link you are sent once you sign.

Out and About in the Community

Official Opening of the Decker Park Basketball Court

The Decker Park basketball court was officially opened on Saturday.  Thanks to everyone who came along to celebrate and a special thanks to Northside Wizards Basketball for running their Aussie Hoops session.

Well done to Aponga for winning the shooting contest and Jackson for winning the free raffle, both going home with a new basketball!

It was great to have Stirling Hinchliffe MP and Anika Wells for Lilley there to help celebrate the new court.

Mad Mob Fundraiser

The 'Mad Mob' gathered for the 7th year at Brighton Bowls on Saturday to raise money for cancer research and support. This annual event has raised thousands of dollars every year.

This year's event was the biggest yet - well done ladies (and gents)!

Yarrageh Drama Festival

I was proud to sponsor the Yarrageh Drama Festival once again this year.

Now in its 43rd year, this festival hosted by Sandgate Theatre Inc. is a great opportunity for people to perform in a competitive, yet supportive environment.

This year there were 27 different acts over the weekend hailing from all over Brisbane - making this the biggest festival in years!

Well done to festival coordinator Glenda and the whole team.

Shorncliffe State School Grandparents Garden

Shorncliffe State School couldn't have asked for better weather for their annual Spring Fling yesterday! It's always great to head back to my old school.

I presented the P&C with a $500 donation for their brand new grandparents garden. This new garden is showing students where food comes from and also giving them a new way to connect with grandparents. The garden will allow students to connect with both their own grandparents and also other older people in the community who may not have their own grandchildren close by.

Zillmere Festival

The Zillmere Festival was another huge success! Thanks to the Jabiru team and the amazing bunch of volunteers who made the day possible.

This festival is a great celebration of the diverse community we call home - and it gets bigger and better every year! I held a joint stall with Leanne Linard MP, Stirling Hinchliffe MP and Wayne Swan MP.

I'm always very proud to support this wonderful event each year.

Indigenous Careers Expo

PCYC Zillmere hosted their first Indigenous Careers Expo on September 3. This event was supported by the Queensland Police Service and driven by Sgt Richard Monaei, surrounded by a big team of volunteers from many different organisations.

This event brought together dozens of agencies, education providers and employers to give our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community the opportunity for study or work after school.

This is such a great initiative and I'm really proud to support it.

Shorncliffe State School Father's Day Active School Travel Day

There were bumper crowds at the Shorncliffe State School Father's Day Active School Travel Day on Friday September 2.

Shorncliffe has really embraced Council's active travel program and we are seeing great results!

Shorncliffe have taken out the Deagon Ward BBLAST Active Travel Trophy each terms this year so far for the most active travel of our local schools.

Sandcliffe Writers Festival

The Sandcliffe Writers Festival held another fantastic festival in our local area. It all kicked off with the literary dinner with the very talented and funny Nick Earls

The festival held events with local writers and finished up at EclecTea on Sunday 26 August, with a full day of events culminating in an open mic afternoon.

This is another local event putting our local community on the map!

Healthy Ageing Expo - Brighton Health Campus

Friday August 24 saw the Healthy Ageing Expo take place at the Brighton Health Campus (Eventide). Over 50 stalls were there on the day with a range of information and services provided.

As part of the expo, I joined Stirling Hinchliffe MP, Executive Director Tami Photinos and residents, staff and visitors to officially open the Brighton Health Campus wellbeing garden.

Uncle George, a Meriam Elder from the Torres Strait and resident at Brighton Health Campus, worked with Sandgate District State High School students to paint the shelter with local stories.

If you're taking a stroll along the Brighton Foreshore, be sure to walk up the new path and check out the garden.

Gardening @ the Gate

It was another beautiful day out in the community for our second annual Gardening @ the Gate with Jerry Coleby-Williams.

When you get a couple of hundred gardening enthusiasts together with some great experts - you know it's going to be a great day!

Thanks to the Sandgate Men's Shed, Nashville State School, Basil Lea, Greg's Native Stingless BeesOctane Coffee Co. and the Jabiru Playbus.

Our presenters including Jerry, Sarah from Basil Lea and Council's waste reduction team were very informative and lots of people took away some great tips.

Face of Ageing Exhibition (October 10)

Come along to the launch of the Face of Ageing Exhibition at the SANDBAG Community Centre. The aim of this project is to explore and communicate positive experiences of ageing in the community. The Face of Ageing project is about how we value and take pride in who we are as we age, what we have achieved, and our aspirations for the future.

COTA Queensland Community Ambassadors are volunteers who are passionate about the rights, needs and interests of older people in the community. For this project, the Ambassadors are using iPads to take photographs and create short audio clips and videos that convey the everyday “Face of Ageing” in their local communities.

The launch will take place at the SANDBAG Community Centre on Wednesday, October 10 from 10am - 1pm.

Sandgate Sunset Run (October 13)

The Sandgate Sunset Run is back for its 5th annual event! I have sponsored this local event each year through the Deagon Ward Suburban Initiative Fund.

Sunset Run have 5 fantastic events back this year, so the whole family can take part.

All events take place around the 250-metre Sandgate Roundabout. The team events can be made up of 2-4 participants. Every participant in every event receives a medal.

There’ll be:
  • Kids’ Dash: ages 9 and under run laps around the roundabout for 5 minutes. This year, we’ll stagger the start into age groups to make it safer and more fun for all the kids!

  • Junior Relay: ages 10-15 run relay laps of the roundabout for 20 minutes. Start getting your teams together – there’s always some friendly rivalry between school groups, sporting clubs and friends!

  • Social Relay: ages 12 & over run relay laps of the roundabout for 40 minutes. This is a fun, social, less-competitive event that families and friends can take part in together. All the fun of the main relay, but much less intense & with a big focus on dressing up & having a great time!

  • Open Relay: our showcase event sees ages 16 & over run relay laps of the roundabout for 2 hours. It’s make or break as teams work out their strategies, and test their endurance as the clock counts down.

  • NEW HOT LAP: Participants will run one single hot lap of the Sandgate Roundabout in the reverse direction. It’s all the atmosphere, thrill and excitement of the event, condensed into one exciting lap!

Male and female heats will be run, with the winners of each going through to the finals, where they’ll sprint for a cash prize. Numbers will be strictly capped on this event, so be sure to secure your spot!
