Celebrate Opening Night of the 13th annual Tacoma Film Festival with feature film PROSPECT at The Grand Cinema and after party with appetizers, drinks, music, Q&A with directors Zeek Earl & Chris Caldwell, and filmmaker open mic!

FILM SYNPOSIS
A teenage girl and her father travel to an alien moon to strike it rich. They've secured a contract to harvest elusive gems hidden in the depths of the moon's forest, but there are others roving the wilderness and the job quickly devolves into a fight to survive.

Shirley Roberson, senior associate at Hughes Media Law Group, presents an entertaining discussion of how filmmakers can protect their intellectual property, conduct business in an effective and efficient manner, and how to avoid common pitfalls when developing, producing, and distributing media projects. Presented by Washington Lawyers for the Arts. At HMLG, Shirley works with a broad range of clients, including those in the entertainment, media, gaming, and tech industries. Before attending Loyola Law School, Shirley put her MBA to work as a communications manager for DIRECTV®.

THE INDIE GUIDE TO CAPTIONS & SUBTITLES

Part education, part advocation, this workshop shares the importance of adding captions and subtitles to indie film projects. In 90 minutes, presenter Matt Longmire will teach you how to expand your audience to the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities, to the rest of the world with foreign language subtitles, and to be found by your target audience through SEO, all for either free or remarkably less cost than you’d imagine.

Learn how to convey the specifics about your upcoming project in a dynamic, succinct way can land you not only investors, but collaborators, audience members, and more. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn: what makes a good pitch, how to tailor your pitch to different audiences, and why a little research can go a long way. Most importantly, this workshop will give you a chance to practice refining your own pitch in a safe, encouraging environment. Presented by Gerry Maravilla, an LA-based filmmaker and the Head of Crowdfunding at Seed&Spark.

Wednesday, October 10, 4 PM at The Grand Cinema

Film 253 grant recipients will share samples of their work, and their current successes and challenges. This is a great opportunity to make connections for future collaborations.
