Global Working Animals Day 2018
"We must not refuse with our eyes what they endure with their bodies. Animals cannot ask for the pain to stop, they need us to be their voice."
To mark this year's Global Working Animal Day, our veterinarian team along with interns from HICAST pampered the donkeys, mules and horses at the Animal Nepal donkey sanctuary in Godavari. They were given their favourite treats of apples and carrots and lots of extra cuddles!
This was an extra special treat for donkeys like Lav and Kush, for they would have been just two of the many millions of equines serving as working animals globally. Luckily, Lav and Kush were found and rescued almost five years ago after they had been abandoned by their brick kiln owners in the outskirts of Kathmandu. They were in a terrible state, with a lot of visible physical injuries and severely malnourished. At the brick factory, they would have been overworked and overburdened, working long hard days with not enough rest or nourishment.
In 2009, Animal Nepal began to highlight and address issues regarding the welfare of working animals in Nepal, with the help of The Donkey Sanctuary UK. At this time, the condition of most working equines in Nepal was very poor, with the animals regularly sustaining injuries, neglect and abuse. Animal Nepal began an education program targeting the brick kiln owners and equine handlers, teaching them about animal welfare. One of the biggest achievements by Animal Nepal to date, has been the signing of the MoU with the Ministry of Livestock, whereby the Animal Welfare Directive was issued, which addresses the condition of working animals in Nepal and provides recommendations such as number of working hours, dietary and healthcare needs. Furthermore, through Animal Nepal's tireless advocacy, animal abuse has been criminalised in the Criminal Code of Nepal. With the help of supporters, Animal Nepal will continue to work towards improving the welfare of working and other animals in Nepal.
