Enjoy Sarge’s Furry Friends Benefit Bash Oct. 4
There is still time to RSVP for Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation’s 10th annual Furry Friends Benefit Bash. The evening of fun, food, music and lively auctions will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, at the Laurel Ridge Country Club in Waynesville. But get your tickets now — the event has sold out the last four years!
“Laurel Ridge Country Club is a beautiful setting for the event,” said event chairman and Sarge’s board president Jed Lambert. “Come join Sarge’s for an evening of fun celebrating the animals we love.”
Before the dinner, guests may bid on silent auction items, including dining, golf and spa packages, and unique items for people and their pets. A highlight will be the rights to have the winner’s dog’s picture on the 2019 Sarge’s Dog Walk T-shirt.
New this year is a professional photo booth photographer to snap pictures of those who attend. Guests will receive a digital photo to share in their own social media.
Todd Thompson, owner of Thompson Carr Auctions in Sevierville, Tennessee, will host the live auction — always lively and always fun-filled.
The event is a sit-down dinner with choice of two entrées and a cash bar. Meal selections are due by Sept. 28.
Tickets are $80 per person. Table sponsorships are available for $675 (table for eight guests). Call 828-246-9050 or visit www.sargeanimals.org.

Spotlight on Volunteering
This issue of the e-news, features Sarge’s volunteer programs. If you’re already volunteering, thank you for your hard work.
If you haven’t volunteered yet, check out the many programs that Sarge’s staff and volunteer and foster coordinator, Windy McKinney, have put together.
Remember that you are making a huge difference for animals in Haywood County — and raising the profile of Sarge’s in the community.
A special thank you goes to Champion Credit Union staff for contributing a work day at the shelter. They made pupsicles, catsicles, snuffle mats, cat scratchers and enrichment boxes —  and said they had a great time.
Youth for Sarge's Reorganization
Parents, teachers, children: Windy is gathering ideas and feedback on reforming a youth volunteer group. It’s likely to be split into younger and older children’s groups.
“While animal handling is not an option in most cases for children, we want to find other ways that kids can have positive experiences and learn important skills from being around shelter animals,” Windy said.
Windy would love to hear from teachers/educators with ideas — or if they would like to volunteer to help. Email ideas or questions: sarge.vol.coordinator@gmail.com.
Photography and Videos
As many of you know, getting shelter animals adopted often takes marketing. Sarge’s staff stresses that photos and videos of Sarge’s animals — being their awesome selves — are vitally important.
“We’re always looking for great photos and videos of Sarge’s animals,” Windy said.
People volunteering or fostering are asked to take pictures and videos of the great things these animals do and send them to Sarge’s. Often it’s a great image that gets people to come in and take a look at the animals up for adoption.
Fostering
Foster Orientation will be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Haywood County Animal Shelter in the Education Room.
“If you have space in your home and heart to take in one (or more!) of Sarge’s animals, fostering works wonders towards getting them into a safe place while they await adoption, and allows us to bring more vulnerable animals into the Shelter and Adoption Center,” Windy said. Educational classes
Sarge’s staff members offer great educational classes. All free and open to the public, and last about an hour. Learn more about the dogs and cats in Sarge’s care, and your own furry friends.
Each week, there is usually one class, taught by Sarge’s Behavior Coordinator Caitlin Morrow, and one orientation with Windy. Feedback on the classes has been great. Don’t miss out. The upcoming classes are as follows:
• 10/2 10 a.m. — Cat Body Language
• 10/09 4 p.m. — Dog Body Language
• 10/17 5:30 p.m. — Dog Handling; learn how to safely and happily move dogs from one location to  another
• 10/27 10 a.m. — Cat Handling; learn how to safely and happily move cats from one location to another
• 10/30 4 p.m. — Dog Adventure Skills; learn the basics of taking dogs off property on leash
Space is limited, so please register here.
Facebook Group
For those on Facebook, find Sarge’s closed group Sarge Volunteers and ask to be added. It serves as a message board for last minute volunteer opportunities, volunteer and foster photos and videos, and up-to-date adoption news.
Off-site Events
There are often volunteer opportunities outside of the Adoption Center, county shelter and PetSmart that take volunteers into the community, as Sarge’s volunteers did over Labor Day weekend at the Canton festival. Watch for notices of upcoming events.
“Thanks for all you do,” Windy said. “I'm so grateful to work with so many compassionate, hard-working, and committed people. We couldn't save so many healthy companion animals from euthanasia without you.”
Karaoke Nights to return
Sarge’s supporters and staff love the Karaoke nights at Boojum Brewing’s downstairs Gem bar. Stay tuned for details on the next Karaoke Night, which is in the planning stages for either January or February.
Infirmary News
In the infirmary this month, are Sarge’s dogs Easton and Beethoven.
It’s sad to know that Easton suffered a gunshot wound some time ago, which shattered the bone in his right front leg.
“At his point, since it was causing him pain, his leg had to be amputated,” said Nancy Bulluck, Sarge’s founder, medical assistant and social media manager. “He has done well with the surgery and is expected to make a full recovery and feel much better.”
Beethoven, a female Jack Russell Terrier, is in the middle of pre-treatment for heartworm disease. She'll have the treatment to kill the adult heartworms the first week in October.
Sarge’s is grateful to all who donate to the WuzBug Fund for Special Needs to aid in medical treatment for these dogs and cats.
Please be an angel and donate to replenish the fund, so that Sarge’s can take care of the next special needs animal that comes along.

Product needs
Sarge’s staff is asking for a 10’ x 10’ pop-up tent to use for off-site events. This kind of tent is available locally.
In addition, the Adoption Center needs Force Flex garbage bags and Kongs for Aggressive Chewers, which are on Sarge’s Amazon Wish List.
Visit www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/?ie=UTF8&cid=AJUNDSQKA2525. Sarge’s animals and staff say, “Thank you!”
