Monthly News Blast
Dear Colleagues,

This month we will celebrate the official launch of the Center for the Advanced Study and Practice of Hope, or the “Hope Center.” This initiative is a collective impact partnership between Arizona State University, the T. Denny School of Social and Family Dynamics, and the not-for-profit organization Kids at Hope. The Hope Center facilitates the study and practice of hope as a mechanism to enrich the lives of children, adults, families, and communities. Please see the announcement below for event details, and plan to join us for the Hope Center launch speakers and activities on October 24-25, 2018. To learn more about this innovative partnership, see https://thesanfordschool.asu.edu/center-for-advanced-study-practice-of-hope.

Professor Kevin Sutherland, from Virginia Commonwealth University, will present on October 18 on community-engaged research, featuring a prevention program implemented in schools to aid children at-risk for emotional/behavioral disorders. The following week on October 23, Duke University Professor Emeritus Philip Costanzo will lead a Sanford School Discussion Hour on “Promoting Youth Leaders for Social Change and Civic Engagement.” Additionally, the Latino Resilience Enterprise Brown Bag Series is featuring two ASU scholars in upcoming presentations: Postdoctoral Scholar Daisy Camacho-Thompson (October 26), and Assistant Professor Edward Vargas from the School of Transborder Studies (November 2).

We hope to see you at these engaging events.

Sincerely,
Marilyn Thompson
Associate Director

Sanford School assistant professor Sarah Lindstrom Johnson featured in new research study on school security

A new paper by Sarah Lindstrom Johnson, showed that high numbers of security cameras inside schools were associated with students having lower feelings of safety as well as lower feelings of support and equity at their school.

“The big take-home to this is that there may be a cost to these security measures if they are not done well,” said Lindstrom Johnson.

The Sanford School co-sponsors Global Sport Institute kickoff event

ASU’s Global Sport Institute (GSI) is where diverse disciplines come together to thoughtfully examine critical issues impacting sport. Representing the Sanford School was associate professor Scott Brooks, GSI’s director of research.

In support of this year’s theme, “Race & Sport Around the Globe”, the GSI invited Yale University sociology professor Elijah Anderson to be the speaker at the kickoff event. Anderson is an ethnographer — someone who studies culture from the point of view of people in it. Every day, black people have to navigate in “white spaces,” dispelling stereotypes and convincing everyone that they’re worthy.

2018 DISI Fall research showcase
This past month, the Diversity and Inclusion Science Initiative hosted its first Annual Research Showcase. This event highlighted research conducted by the 2017-2018 DISI Cohort of Undergraduate, Graduate, and Post-Doctoral Fellows. Graduate and undergraduate fellows shared their research findings through presentations and posters. Research topics included studies such as evaluations of interventions focused on supporting family engagement and preventing social biases in young children, and examinations of the role that community spaces and parents play in supporting psychological adjustment.

Matthew Nielson
I am a third year PhD student studying under Carol Martin. I am starting to formulate my dissertation on the pressure to conform to gender norms: where it comes from, what it leads to, and how these processes might change developmentally. I love running, cooking, and reading. I'm always happy for book recommendations!

I love this part in my graduate education - I finally feel like I have the competency to conceptualize, analyze, write, and publish quality research ideas. I’m excited for the next couple of years and hope to paper my walls with publications!
