Author Matt Goldman is Here Friday Night at 7pm

Matt Goldman is a playwright and Emmy Award-winning television writer for SeinfeldEllen, and other shows. He brings his signature storytelling abilities and light touch to his debut novel Gone to Dust. He began his career as a stand-up comedian while attending the University of Minnesota before moving to Los Angeles to write full-time. Doug Moe will be interviewing Matt about his new book, Broken Ice -- the second book in his award-winning series about detective Nils Shapiro.
"In the midst of a compelling mystery, Goldman introduces vivid supporting characters, such as medical examiner Char Northagen, with a finesse built on the author’s background in stand-up comedy and television writing, promising a long and enjoyable series. Recommended for fans of clever mysteries and witty detectives such as Robert B. Parker’s Jesse Stone.” — Booklist, starred review

And then there is Saturday!
2018 Monroe Street Festival

It may come as a surprise to you that the Monroe Street Merchants are going ahead with a Monroe Street Festival -- but what better time to celebrate the fact that we've survived almost six months of road construction. Three more months to go... and it's looking fantastic!

The 41st Annual Monroe Street Festival will feature street/sidewalk sales (where it's possible), children's activities, loads of entertainment and more!
Plan your day -- Here's a link to the Festival Website

At Mystery to Me we won't be able to be out on the sidewalk, but we will have sales inside and at 2pm it's story-time with Linda Vander Heyden, author of Hannah's Tall Order - an A to Z Sandwich. She's also the author of Mr. McGinty's Monarchs and A Horse Named Jack.

Of course we don't have enough of a road to have our goodies out on the sidewalk but rest assured we will have plenty of fantastic prizes, including Mystery to Me t-shirts, gift certificates, wrapped mystery books, and more.

Pulitzer Prize Winner Carolyn Fraser, Author of Prairie Fires

6 pm
Wisconsin Historical Society

The Wisconsin Book Festival and the Friends of the UW-Madison Libraries are happy to host Pulitzer Prize winning author, Carolyn Fraser.

The first comprehensive historical biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder, the beloved author of the "Little House on the Prairie" books.

Millions of readers of "Little House on the Prairie" believe they know Laura Ingalls—the pioneer girl who survived blizzards and near-starvation on the Great Plains, and the woman who wrote the famous autobiographical books. But the true saga of her life has never been fully told. Now, drawing on unpublished manuscripts, letters, diaries, and land and financial records, Caroline Fraser—the editor of the Library of America edition of the Little House series—masterfully fills in the gaps in Wilder’s biography. Revealing the grown-up story behind the most influential childhood epic of pioneer life, she also chronicles Wilder's tumultuous relationship with her journalist daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, setting the record straight regarding charges of ghostwriting that have swirled around the books.

Jen Rubin will be interviewed by Doug Moe about her book We Are Staying
Tuesday, October 2 - 7 pm

Richly detailed, We Are Staying: Eighty Years in the Life of a Family, a Store, and a Neighborhood, is a remarkably powerful, poignantly told story of a family, a business, a neighborhood and a city. It is an immigrant story, a grandfather-father-daughter story, a story of the unique character a family business brings to a neighborhood, and a reflection on what has been lost as stores like these disappear.

Jen Rubin is a former New Yorker living in Madison, WI.  An obsessive maker of mixed tapes and quite possibly the best challah baker in town, she has worked for social change throughout her career. Jen leads storytelling workshops around Madison, co-produces the Moth StorySlam in Madison, and teaches the occasional social policy class at the University of Wisconsin School of Social Work.  She also works at the Wisconsin Historical Society Press.

"The best political stories are the human ones, and Jen Rubin recognizes this...Anyone who cares about urban policy, the history and the future of New York City and of a country that suffers from so much division, yet has the potential still to unite, will cherish this book."
