Florence Floods

Hurricane Florence was/is disastrous for two reasons: first it was a hurricane that struck the SC coast and ravaged much of NC and now, second, all that rain that fell is causing large areas of flooding.  The storm may be gone but a great portion of NC is flooded and our rivers in Northeastern SC are overflowing their banks.  Hopefully the rivers have all crested and will be soon receding but then there is the clean up and rebuilding.

I have heard stories of families, friends and even strangers evacuating from the coast for the hurricane and staying with some of our church members.  We are glad they are safe.  Some have returned to their homes, if they could, but many can't return yet due to the flood waters, not knowing when they can return and most likely to devastation.  It will be a long recovery.

Please pray for all those whose lives and property have been and are still being impacted by the floods.  Second, consider a gift to the South Carolina Synod Disaster Response used for short term (weeks, months) responses to those who are the hardest hit within the Carolinas
https://scsynod.com/news/hurricane-florence/

Or you can give to the ELCA Lutheran Disaster Response which goes to the long-term (years) recovery efforts - https://community.elca.org/givenow

A specific request is for Personal Care Kits which you can build.  To know what items are needed and how to package these kits, go to https://lwr.org/get-involved/build-kits-of-care/personal-care-kits or for details, contact Daniel at 914-384-5499 or Daniel.altenau@raldioc.org .  Now is not the  time to respond with "mucking out" teams quite yet as flooding continues in many areas.

Call Committee

to be Installed

Sunday, September 23rd
Ann Alexander, Elizabeth Bickley & Mary Kinsler

Otto Hage, Mikel Smith & Marvin Sox (Chair)

Our Council, on September 9th, elected our Call Committee to search for a new Pastor.  We think it is representative of gender, age and ministries.  Marvin Sox is the Chair.  They have already met and were provided a brief overview.  The Call Committee will be installed this Sunday, September 23rd, but their work will not begin most likely until late October.

First, a Task Force is completing our church's Ministry Site Profile for Council to approve at their next meeting on October 14th which will then be sent to Bishop Yoos.  After review, he will  match our needs with the talents of Pastor candidates and provide three names to our Call Committee to explore.  Advent and Christmas are busy times for all pastors so we are realistically looking to possibly make a call at the earliest in the time between Christmas and Lent.

Several suggested names of Pastor candidates will be given to Marvin to present to the Call Committee to potentially make a request to the Bishop.  Only the Bishop can approach these pastors and, if they're available, determine if they would be a good match with St. David.  Also, if you ask who is under review, the Call Committee's response most likely will be, "I can't tell you; that's confidential."

This is a very important undertaking for our church. Please pray for our congregation, our interim Pastor, the Mission Site Profile Task Force, our Church Council, prospective Pastor candidates, Bishop Yoos and our Call Committee.

PLAYGROUND

Kids love to play on our church playground

be it after worship service or during day school.  Sometimes children fall which is why the insurance carrier requires our church playground to have a cushion layer; currently we use wood chips (mulch).

Over time the mulch on our playground has experienced termites and has deteriorated and washed away so the protective cushion is not what it needs to be.

It is time to replace the mulch which can be with either sand, gravel, tree mulch or rubber mulch/pads.  Though more costly, we are considering installing rubber mulch/pads as it has better absorption/cushioning (protection against a fall), is termite and mold resistant, is more durable than tree mulch and is made from recycled (wire-free/non-radial) tires.

Please Help Replace our Playground Mulch by making a donation to our building maintenance fund through your weekly offering to "Playground."

Note: If donations exceed what is needed for the playground they will go to building maintenance and repairs.

Bible Verse of the Day

Ephesians 4:29

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...

Have you ever heard or participated in spreading unkind words about someone?  Sometimes it may be true.  Many times it is not completely factual.  Often it is demeaning and hurtful to that person.  So why do we do it?  Does it make us feel better than the other person?  Wouldn't it be wonderful if we used that same energy to spread kind words about someone, encouragement, love.

The goal in Christian communication is not just clarity. The goal is not just to be understood. The goal is not just to be truthful. The goal is to be appropriate, encouraging, and building up others based on what the needs of the other person are.

Prayer...

Tender Shepherd, give me a heart that is pure so that my words may be pure. Give me a heart that is kind so that my words may be kind. Give me a heart that is full of joy and encouragement so that I may share these with those you bring to my path and with whom I share conversation. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
