Details for Race #3 at Fort Custer on 9/23
MiSCA is happy to add Fort Custer as a new venue in our series for 2018. The trails at Fort Custer are unique and fun for all abilities. The area was originally farmland until the government began using it as an army training center during WWII. Some sections of trail traverse interesting historical features that are still visible today. Restrooms and changing rooms are on-site. Camping is available, call or go online to reserve.

The mountain bike trails at Fort Custer alternate direction each day. Our race course is going in the counter-clockwise direction that is normal for Sundays. This causes issues for those wishing to pre-ride on Saturday. Regardless of the day of the week, all riders must follow the correct direction of the trail - that means if you pre-ride on Saturday you will ride in the opposite direction (clockwise) compared to race day.

It is highly recommended that you pre-ride the course on Friday and possibly hike the marked course on Saturday. The course is also open for pre-riding on Sunday (race day) morning - make sure you are off the trail before 10 am when the first wave of riders will start. There are lots of other trail users so the correct directions must be maintained.

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are the days that the trail will be in the proper direction to match Sunday. Any pre-riding on race day must be COMPLETE by 10 am

1 Child = 1 Race Day Volunteer Needed!
We need your help to ensure race day is safe and runs smoothly. If you have a child racing in the D&D Bicycles 2018 MiSCA Race Series, please sign up to volunteer for a few hours. If every family volunteers just once, we will have plenty of volunteers to fill the year! You can sign up for these important roles via Sports Illustrated Play or email us. To register in SI Play, follow the steps to sign up to coach/volunteer, selecting yourself (adult), and the race you wish to volunteer at. Next select race day volunteer and scroll to the bottom of the page for the needed volunteer roles (listed below). If you'd prefer, please email Jodie Giles, our volunteer coordinator and let us know how you can help! We also need help with setup on Saturday!
  • Course Marking and Start/Finish Setup: Hop on a bike or help out near the pits, clearly identifying course direction/boundaries and hazards to avoid. Your help ensures we start the races on time!
  • Parking and Traffic Control: Greet folks as they arrive and direct them to the designated parking areas. Direct traffic for road closures.
  • Registration: Help us get set up, then it's all about communication helping coaches and student-riders get ready to race!
  • Course Marshal: Be right in the heart of racing! Stationary and Roaming Course Marshals are on the course to help ensure that riders stay on course, remain uninjured, and make other park users aware of the race. You may also assist racers when they finish the race - some need a bit of help knowing how to exit the course. It's a prime time spectating position.
  • Course Cleanup: Our goal is to "leave no trace" and many hands make light work!
Passing Slower Student-Athletes (and being passed)
When passing on the race course, do so respectfully and only when it is possible to do so safely and without contact with another rider. Actions that compromise the safety of other student-athletes will not be tolerated. Call out when passing slower racers. “Passing left” indicates you will be passing on their left, “passing on your right” indicates you will be passing on their right. It is the responsibility of passing riders to overtake safely. Riders should voice the command “passing” when overtaking another rider.

Riders being passed must move over as quickly, efficiently, and as safely as possible.  In the event two riders are vying for position, the leading rider does not have to yield his position to the challenging rider. However, a rider may not bodily interfere with the intent to impede another rider's progress. Traditional rules of racing apply: the leading rider owns the track.

Congratulations to Greg Schroeder from South Lyon! He's the winner of our raffle for the $1,500 Giant/Liv gift card! After we informed him, Greg replied, "Wow! Thank you so much! I'm happy to support a group that promotes cycling as an alternative to other sports for students. It's a great lifetime activity that they can rely on." Right on!

We couldn't do it without our sponsors! Special thanks to Giant Bicycles and D&D Bicycles.
