“We love breasts, yet we can’t quite take them seriously. We name them affectionately, but with a hint of insult. Breasts embarrass us. They’re unpredictable. They’re goofy. They can turn both babies and grown men into lunkheads.” So writes Florence Williams in her book “Breasts, a Natural and Unnatural History”, which was labelled one of the 100 notable books by The New York Times Book Review of the year. The book is both entertaining and informative, and I would recommend it to anyone with an inquisitive mind.
Florence Williams verbalises my fascination with breasts like this: “...they appear out of nowhere at puberty, they get bigger in pregnancy, they’re capable of producing prodigious amounts of milk, and sometimes they get sick. We know men even get them once in a while, and that tweaks us out. … We are filling them with saline and silicone and transplanted stem cells to change their shape.“ Both sexes share this part of the anatomy, and whilst men cannot breastfeed, they do suffer from conditions of the breast as well – the most notable being gynaecomastia, or man-boobs, but also breast cancer.
After facial cosmetic and non-surgical facial cosmetic procedures, breast surgery – both cosmetic and reconstructive – is my favourite surgery to perform. The next couple of newsletters will focus on breast surgery and will include a wide variety of topics related to breasts, which should be of interest to everyone.
We are in the process of rebranding the website with a new look and more content. This will spill over to our business cards and social media over the next couple of months. As you can imagine, this is an enormous task. We do everything in-house: we create our own content and graphic design rather than borrowing from other websites. While this takes many hours and lots of input, it does allow us to create something from the heart, and true to who we are and what we stand for as a practice. The process will therefore continue over the next couple of months. In the meantime, you can visit the new website here. There are still a couple of changes to be made, but the general structure is in place, and you should be able to access a lot of the content.
We will update our social media pages (Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter and You Tube) when we add more content, so keep on visiting and informing yourself. Please let us know if there is something you would like us to add to the website, or if you pick up on glitches and errors – you are our most valued editors, proof-readers and support system.
