Calling all Runners & Walkers!

Register online HERE

HLGU’s annual Trojan Trek will be held on Saturday, October 27. Sponsored by HLGU’s Cross Country and Track & Field teams, the 5k Run/Walk begins at 9 am at the Roland Fine Arts Center.

The Trojan Trek course will differ from past years. This year, the trek will be a grass course that weaves through HLGU’s picturesque front lawn.

Plaques will be given to the overall male and female, overall male and female HLGU alumni, and overall male and female in the masters division, aged 40+. Additionally, the top two runners in each age group will receive medals.

The cost to register is $25, $15 for HLGU alumni, students, faculty, and staff, or $75 for families of five. All those registered before October 12, are guaranteed a t-shirt. On and after October 12, the registration fee increases to $30.

Proceeds from the event will help offset student expenses for the cross country and track and field teams.

The HLGU Cross Country and Track & Field teams are comprised of 41 athletes. During the 2017-18 school year, the teams brought home 34 all-conference performances. In 2017, for cross country, the Trojans produced two national qualifiers, Bailey Wagner and Lauren Sisco, and had five ladies under 21 minutes for the first time in the team’s 15 year history.

During indoor track season the men’s track team placed third in conference, making the team all-conference. In the 2018 outdoor track season the men’s team placed second in conference, making the team all-conference. The team also set four new school records in the 4×100, 4×400, shot put, and hammer throw. The Lady Trojans also broke the school record in the 4×100.

This athletic program produces more than champions though. The combined GPA for cross country athletes is 3.28 and for track and field is 3.37.

Luke Zamperini is the son of Louis Zamperini, one of World War II’s most well-known prisoners of war and hero of the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Louis Zamperini is the subject of Laura Hillenbrand’s latest book, Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption, which has repeatedly been in the number one position on The New York Times Bestseller list and was made into the 2014 movie Unbroken, directed by Angelina Jolie.

Louis Zamperini passed away on July 2, 2014, but Luke is honored to continue carrying the torch of his father’s legacy. For nearly 50 years, Luke accompanied his father to hundreds of speaking engagements and is thoroughly versed in every aspect of Louis’ incredible story of bravery and survival.

When Luke Zamperini speaks to audiences about his father, he adds a unique perspective, focusing on how the discipline of athletics, scouting, and education prepared Louis to survive his incredible ordeal at sea, and would subsequently help him to endure cruelty and humiliation as a prisoner of war.
