FROM THE RECTOR:
Dear Parishioners and Friends of St James’,
I preached last Sunday on “How We Worship.” The sermon audio is available here: http://saintjamestxk.org/media/sermons/. Part II this coming Sunday.
I’ve had several questions from people this week about my sermon remarks that Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses are not Creedal Christians. Mormons are in fact Tri-theists: They believe in Three Gods—a Father God, a Son God and a Spirit God, whereas Nicene Christianity confesses One God in Trinity of Persons and unity of Substance. Jehovah’s Witnesses are even further removed from Nicene orthodoxy because they hold that Jesus is a creation of God (not the uncreated and eternally begotten Son of the Father), and that he is identified elsewhere in Scripture as Michael the Archangel. Needless to say, both of these religious bodies are sub-Christian when measured against the Creed.
The Church has always held Lex ordandi est lex credendi est lex vivendi, or The law of prayer is the law of belief is the law of living. Or to put it another way, what we pray and believe has a profound effect on how we live. For instance, if we confess and worship Jesus as the Incarnation (enfleshment) of God, this has profound implications for how we view the human person: that at every stage of life, each person in imbued with dignity and worth because God in Christ took upon himself our human flesh.
I’ve said it before of late, but it does bear repeating, that I am very thankful the way everyone has stepped into the breach in the absence of a second priest at St James’. A number of you continue to ask how they might be of greater assistance. Stay tuned for my further thoughts on that. But suffice it to say, one of the most important ways that you can help is your patronage of the various opportunities and programs at St James’: be at Mass, take part in Christian education, support the Wednesday night program, be engaged in some sort of ministry. Many of your fellow parishioners are giving of their best to ensure that we are humming along on all cylinders, and you can do your part by taking advantage of all that we offer.
Finally, if you are a former student of St James’ Day School, or had children attend the school, or simply want to lend your support, plan to attend the SJDS 70 th anniversary celebration. Details and registration is here: https://www.stjamesdayschool.org/.
That weekend also happens to be the Feast of All Saints’, and we will have our customary Mexican lunch in the Great Hall after Mass. The preacher at the 10am Mass will be Fr David Madison, Executive Director of the Southwest Association of Episcopal Schools.
Yours with every blessing,
Rev. Douglas Anderson, Rector
