Open Silo Dispatch
1. Open Silo Happy Hour  |  Sept 27  |  6 pm

This month Open Silo is hosting our Urban Agriculture Happy Hour at Verdugo Bar on Thursday, September 27th! We will be co-hosting with Food Forward, an organization dedicated to rescuing surplus produce and getting it into the kitchens and onto the plates of those who need it.

No matter what your field of work, study, or interest, we want to meet you! All who are passionate about urban agriculture or food issues are welcome. Bring a friend or colleague along. Dress is casual. Come anytime after 6 pm!

About Food Forward:

Food Forward fights hunger and prevents food waste by rescuing fresh surplus produce, connecting this abundance with people in need and inspiring others to do the same. Food Forward focuses its efforts on three primary produce recovery programs: Backyard Harvest, Farmers Market Recovery, and Wholesale Produce Market Recovery.

In all three programs, produce is delivered within 24 hours of recovery or less to over 200 hunger relief organizations, some of whom distribute to an additional 375 direct service agencies. This nutritious produce will reach people in need through social service agencies of all kinds. Gleaning labor is provided by our 7,000 community volunteers at an average of over 180 produce recovery events a month.

In the last 9 years, Food Forward has rescued over 50 million pounds (over 200 million servings) of fresh local produce. Food Forward’s produce recovery programs provide an innovative, cost-effective, scalable, and replicable solution to the increasing need for food donations and the shortage of nutritious options available to our Southern California neighbors in need.

2. Open Silo Dispatch
To further achieve the goal of sharing information and resources among the urban agriculture community of Los Angeles, I am going to try out a weekly/semi-weekly newsletter. Of sorts. The "Open Silo Dispatch" will provide an opportunity to circulate community announcements, job openings, volunteer days, fun facts, interesting links, etc. We are all busy, so I hope to keep these "dispatches" brief and practical.

Feel free to send potential content to jes@opensilo.org.
2. New Community Calendar
Spreading the word about community events was an early goal of Open Silo, since there are a TON of urban ag events happening but the posts and announcements are spread over various media. I envisioned a "master calendar" where one could find out about food-related events in a single place, but, like you, I stay busy and I wanted to find a better solution than just sharing Facebook events and trying to remember to update the SquareSpace calendar on the Open Silo website.

SO, I created a Google calendar,
"Open Silo LA," that lives on the Calendar page BUT you can also subscribe to it and see it on your own calendar app. I added it to the calendar for my personal gmail account, and I now I can easily see upcoming events by toggling on the Open Silo LA calendar.

Check it out and send future events info to jes@opensilo.org!

3. Urban Agriculture Hotline
Inspired by Seattle's Tilth Alliance Garden Hotline, Open Silo now has a hotline number! This number can serve as a first step for people who:
  • Want to get connected to the food-growing community in LA
  • Have a question about growing food
  • Have a land use or zoning question relating to growing food
  • Want to donate to a good farm or food project
  • Have an interesting idea to propose
  • Have a project and are looking for collaborators
  • Looking for a professional farmer or gardener to help with your own garden
Because sometimes you just need to talk to a human.
