Dear Friends,

One year ago, September 20, Hurricane Maria blasted its way over Puerto Rico shutting down power across the island and severely damaging or destroying 400,000 homes.

When Pastor Joseph Grover learned his church building in Sabana Hoyos was spared, he and his congregation began asking God how they could best use the building to serve their community.

In their first Sunday after the storm, a special church offering helped feed 145 people, including the elderly that lived alone and victims sleeping on rubble. Little by little, a new ministry began out of their Alliance church called “Feeding Souls.”
Neighboring churches, other Alliance churches, CAMA, and other Christian relief organizations joined in. By January 2018, Feeding Souls had distributed 9,500 meals, 500 food packets, and 600 temporary roofs provided by Samaritan’s Purse.

In this, God gave them the opportunity to share the gospel with over 1,500 neighbors.

One of those neighbors is Miguel Rivera. Miguel lives by himself and has one hand; he lost the other hand during a fight when he was young. When the storm came, Miguel locked himself in his bathroom. He was safe, but the rest of his home was destroyed. He lost everything.

Through Feeding Souls, the church came to know Miguel. They comforted him, listened to him, and now with the help of your donations, are helping to rebuild his home. When finished, it should be a better home than the one he lost.

“Miguel knows that he has a new family that transcends the coasts of Puerto Rico,” Joseph says. “He discovered a new purpose in God who loves him.”

Another one of their neighbors is Jose. Through the church serving, loving, and rebuilding his roof, Jose came to know Christ. He is a new believer and now serves in Joseph’s church.

A Look Back

Thank you for your generosity and prayers that covered Alliance churches and communities in Puerto Rico over the last year. We praise God for the role you played to:
  • Ship containers of supplies and generators collected by the Spanish Eastern District
  • Hire a local disaster coordinator, Carlos Ramírez, to walk with local Alliance churches
  • Repair a church-run residential treatment center for men experiencing homelessness and addictions
  • Support a church program that offers professional counseling, marriage counseling, and after-school programs for kids
  • Sponsor a retreat for Alliance pastors to find rest and renewal
  • And rebuild over 150 homes, which is still ongoing
Thank you, friends.
