We've been inspired by collaborating with many of you at your school sites as well as at various collaboration and planning days this month. Especially powerful has been exploring at our Collaboration Days the concept of "discretionary spaces," those micro-moments that can have profound and lasting impacts in our math classrooms and on our students' math identities.

Checking our Systems for Equity. One of the guiding principles of our Math work is that "students’ academic success in mathematics must not be predictable on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, language, religion, sexual orientation, cultural affiliation, or special needs." This challenges each of us to pay attention, and to check our assumptions. Enid Lee offers us a useful tool toward this end, "Checking My Systems for Equity," a set of self-reflective questions that can help us in this deep and challenging work. http://my-ecoach.com/online/resources/3916/Checking_Equity_Systems.pdf

Multilingual Math Glossaries are a valuable support for English Language Learners accessing rigorous grade-level math. In addition to the multilingual glossaries on our website, you might find useful this Middle School Math glossary, available in at least 10 languages. Please see the Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools website at:  https://steinhardt.nyu.edu/metrocenter/resources/glossaries.

"What's Going On In This Graph?" is a weekly feature of The New York Times. Using graphs, tables, maps, and charts from newspaper articles, students can build their data interpretation skills as they "Notice & Wonder" about data around current events. Problem Solving Cycle (PSC)

Teacher Leaders in the Problem Solving Cycle met for their first Teacher Leader Planning day, TLP 1-1 this month. They reviewed district data in order to celebrate the incredible shifts math teachers are making in our district.  Teacher Leaders also planned facilitation of their first site-based PSC workshop and previewed a reflective tool to see student feedback on small group interactions called the Practical Measures.  We are looking forward to having even more reflective conversations about equity using this tool.
