Cells to Society Symposium

The annual full day conference that brings together those interested in the environmental health sciences returns for 2018. This year, the event will launch the McGill Sustainability Systems Initiative (MSSI) research theme program "Creating Sustainable Materials for the Future". The day will focus on the challenges and opportunities concerning the design, development, evaluation, and use of materials to help address grand challenges of the 21st century.

The symposium will present two keynote lectures:
  • "Base Code - How convergent technologies are transforming the future of sustainable materials, and the challenge and opportunities they in turn present" with Professor Andrew Maynard of the School for the Future of Innovation at Arizona State University; and Director of the Risk Innovation Lab;
  • "From acceptable risk to safer alternatives: Driving changes in science, policy, and the marketplace that support innovation in sustainable chemicals and materials" with Professor Joel Tickner of the Department of Community Health & Sustainability at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and the Founder of the Green Chemistry and Commerce Council.

Registration now open for student global health case competition


After last year’s success, Friends of Médecins Sans Frontières is proud to present their second Case Competition!

This year’s case in focus is “Displaced Populations: Reproductive Health and Intergenerational Consequences”.
The event is open to undergraduate and graduate students from all universities across Montreal, and students can register as individuals or as teams. No prior global health experience is necessary.

The competition will push students from all disciplines to develop innovative solutions to a global health challenge.

The winners will be announced at Global Health Night 2018 on November 6th, 2018.

2018 Universities Allied for Essential Medicines North American annual conference to be held at McGill

 

Are you interested in equal access to medicines? This year’s North American UAEM (Universities Allied for Essential Medicines) conference will be held in Canada for the very first time at ~McGill~ on October 19-21.  Registration and meals are free!

The McGill Global Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Program will have its first NCD Journal Club on Wednesday Oct 24, 2018, 12-1PM at the Royal Victoria Glen site, room EM1.2225.
 
Dr. Louise Pilote will facilitate discussion on the paper: "Fixed Low-Dose Triple Combination Antihypertensive Medication vs Usual Care for Blood Pressure Control in Patients With Mild to Moderate Hypertension in Sri Lanka A Randomized Clinical Trial", by Webster et al.

This year, we are extremely lucky to have as our keynote speaker Dr. Margaret E. Kruk, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Global Health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and current Chair of the Lancet Global Health Commission on High Quality Health Systems in the SDG Era whose report was launched earlier this month. Her lecture is entitled: “High Quality Health Systems: Ready for a Revolution?” As we are getting very close to capacity, we strongly recommend that you do not wait to RSVP for Global Health Night.

Inaugural recipient of the Dr. Alice Benjamin Global Maternal and Child Health Fund receives award at special celebration

On October 3rd, the McGill and Montreal community came together to celebrate the lasting impact that renowned maternal-fetal medicine specialist Dr. Alice Benjamin had on the lives of Montrealers through her 40+ years at the Royal Victoria Hospital.

The evening was the occasion for former students, patients, and parents, including TV personality Patrice L'Ecuyer, to salute how the Meryl Streep of obstetrics touched their lives. It was also during the event that Céline Giordano, a 4th year obstetrics and gynecology resident received  the inaugural award. Céline will be traveling to Bolivia next Summer. "I am confident that this experience will not only greatly influence and contribute to my personal and professional development, but will also help in beginning to forge a positive relationship between two very different countries."

Contribute to the Dr. Alice Benjamin Global Maternal and Child Health Awards

The Interprofessional Global Health Course Is Looking for a Medical Student Coordinator


We are accepting applications from medical students interested in being a coordinator for the McGill Interprofessional Global Health Course. This not for credit, student-run course enables students to explore Global Health issues in a collaborative and stimulating Interprofessional environment. More information about the course and the schedule from last year can be found here.

Student coordinators from the various health sciences meet regularly from October 2018 to May 2019 in collaboration with the faculty advisors. Faculty Advisors will guide and mentor the student coordinators through the course development. The course runs for 10 weeks on Tuesday evenings (tentative) from January to March 2019.

Medical students have traditionally been very involved with this course thus, it is imperative to have a medical student on the coordinating team.  

Interested applicants are required to submit a one page letter of interest and their CV.

Fall 2018 McGill International TB Centre Travel Awards


Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in the McGill International TB Centre now have until October 15 to submit their applications for this special travel award.

The McGill International TB Centre Travel Awards are intended to support trainees in the fields of Tuberculosis and other mycobacterial research. These awards up to $1,500 each are for conference travel to national and international scientific meetings to present the trainee’s own research. Inaugurated in 2015, these awards are co-funded with Global Health Programs and are awarded twice per year.

Global Health McGillians in the spotlight


Nursing Assistant Professor John Pringle was recently profiled in a McGill Reporter piece on the path led  this former(?) backpacker to where he is now.

Global Health Programs and McGill International TB Centre Director Dr. Madhukar Pai was at the first-ever United Nations High Level Meeting on Tuberculosis held during the UN General Assembly. He provides his impressions here and you can see his interventions in the Multi Stakeholder panel and in the Media zone.

McGill Global Environmental Health Group co-leader Dr. Jonathan Chevrier recently published two papers on his ongoing Venda Health Examination of Mothers, Babies and their Environment (VHEMBE) study which looks at Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) of insecticides, a malaria control measure, and development.

Steinberg Fellow Shaun Cleaver has contributed a case study on participatory research with persons with disabilities in Zambia to the recently released book Ethics in Participatory Research for Health and Social Well-Being: Cases and Commentaries. He is also featured in the latest SPOT GHRI podcast.

At a special announcement made on October 10th on McGill University’s Macdonald Campus, a landmark gift of $5 million from McGill alumna Margaret A. Gilliam, BSc’59 was made to the University’s Institute for Global Food Security which will  be renamed in Ms. Gilliam's honor. This donation will help the Institute's ongoing efforts to understand the root causes of hunger and malnutrition, and develop novel solutions to eradicate food insecurity around the world.

New Course:

The Anthropology of Critical Public Health
 

Starting in the Winter 2019 term, Professor Sandra Hyde will be teaching a new seminar course which will, after a brief introduction to the social determinants of health, will touch on a variety of topics including Medicine, disability and aging; the anti-vaccine movement and concepts of immunity; the new drug epidemics and addicts’ stories; global health, its metrics and data production; and climate change as a public health issue.

Support for Results Dissemination Activities Abroad
The Global Health Strategic Group of the RRSPQ wishes to support Québec graduate students as well as postdoctoral fellows in the dissemination of their global health research results. The goal of this competition is to provide students with funding to allow them to return to their study sites in order to disseminate the results of their research at these locations. Award value up to $3,000.
