Hello!
Yes - I did some baking this week. Cooking, generally, is not one of my favourite pursuits, but I do love baking. It's especially good when the recipe actually works out. I bake for wellbeing and always have.
1) World Peace Cookies - Lily and I were watching endless cooking videos on a sick day and came across the Bon Appétit videos from their test kitchen. So fun! I now know how to make a gourmet kit-kat or a cheeto. I won't, but we did like the look of the chocolate cookie recipe they used for their version of the oreo, so we looked them up and made a batch. They are chocolatey and salty and delicious. Apparently they are designed to save the world.

2) This week I watched the Taika Waititi Master Class from the Toronto International Film Festival. If you have spoken to me for more than two minutes you will know I am a bit of a fan of all things Taika. It's hard for me to choose one film to link to so I am going to hold the first Small Batch List Film Festival - and it's going to be the Taika Waititi Film Fest, starting with his first short film, Two Cars, One Night. (If you don't live in NZ or Australia you will have to google it to find the youtube full version of this). Nominated for an Academy Award in 2004, this film looks at childhood, friendship and patterns of masculinity. It's bittersweet and I think you'll love it. 3) I am really enjoying Aisha Badru's album Pendulum and revisiting the back catalogue of Emiliana Torrini for husky female voices to accompany to falling autumn leaves.

4) I was very lucky to have Australian children's performer Peter Combe as a music teacher at my school when I was little. He was wacky and funny and wrote the craziest songs for us to perform in our annual school shows. I once played someone squeezing into a mailbox, and a little girl eating spaghetti and then in grade 6 I danced in a chorus to a song called Mr Smooth, A Mr Razzamatazz... where part way through the performance I rammed my heel into 11 year old Mr Smooth's foot as he tried to do some inappropriate dance move with me on stage. No way kid. Combe went on to entertain the kids of Australia way before the Wiggles were even a glint in a producer's eye. Here's an episode of the ABC's Throwback series all about his career. 5) I was going to save this until next week for when we actually might have finished the whole series - but as it's al the talk, I thought I should chime in and say Maniac on Netflix is worth having a look at. And I am deliberately focusing on the look because this sci-fi, parallel-universe limited series has such, such great production design. So great. I could watch it with the volume down. That being said, it's also a compelling, ntriguing and sometimes funny new show from True Detective (first season) director Cary Joji Fukunaga. Time mag loved it, so did The New Yorker, but Wired hated it... See for yourself.
