Going the Distance

We all dream of a road trip—an epic cross-country adventure in an old machine where you avoid the fast lane and see the sights. A trip like that takes a great deal of effort, planning and—above all—time. Luckily for us, acclaimed automotive author Tom Cotter and photographer Michael Alan Ross took the time to document their once-in-a-lifetime trip for their new book Ford Model T Coast to Coast: A Slow Drive Across a Fast Country. We have it in stock and ready to ship today.

The premise was a fun one: cram into a 1926 Ford Model T roadster and trek from the heart of New York City to San Francisco on the historic Lincoln Highway. The T’s creature comforts may have been minimal, but the car sports a slew of traditional hot rodding touches from the lack of fenders and lowered suspension to the chopped windshield and Rajo-equipped banger. Estimated horsepower was around 40.

Ford Model T Coast to Coast appeals to us on a number of levels. On the surface, it’s the tale of a 3,700 mile cross-country drive, but beyond that it's a fascinating journey through our nation’s history. Rather than screaming down superhighways and crashing at chain hotels, this book focuses on the diners, motels and roadside attractions we so often gravitate towards. There are highs, lows and plenty of surprises, all making for a trip you won’t want to miss.

This newly released hardcover spans 225 pages and is loaded with entertaining stories from the road. We’re currently working on an excerpt filled with outtakes and extras for an upcoming issue, and we know you’re going to like what you see.
