'Jesus said: "Follow me..."' Mark 1:17
John Ruskin (1819 – 1900) was the leading English art critic of the Victorian era, as well as an art patron, draughtsman, watercolourist, a prominent thinker and philanthropist. He exercised a huge influence in the latter half of the 19th century and thanks to his social criticism he can be considered in many respects the father of the Arts and Crafts Movement to which Holy Trinity, Sloane Street owes a huge debt. The celebrated designer William Morris quickly became one of Ruskin's disciples, adopting his rejection of the industrial manufacture of decorative arts and architecture in favour of a return to craftsmanship, raising artisans to the status of artists, creating art that should be affordable and hand-made.
If Ruskin had a profound effect on Morris, how much more so did Jesus have on Simon and Andrew who we find him with on the shore of the Sea of Galilee in this Sunday's Gospel reading. The two fishermen left everything they knew to become disciples of Christ. Their apprenticeship of faith was so thorough in the course of the three years they spent learning from him that they would eventually lose their lives on account of their convictions. The Greek work for “disciple” in the New Testament means someone who adheres completely to the teachings of another, making them his rule of life and conduct. We can all think of people whose ideas and attitudes have impressed us but are we willing to go further and allow Jesus Christ to be our Master?
Discovering Britain's most inspiring designer
We're off again on another outing, this time to visit the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow on Saturday 29 September. The Gallery is the only public museum devoted to the life and legacy of our own William Morris: designer, craftsman, socialist, who was such an influential figure in the design of Holy Trinity Church. We will leave Holy Trinity at 9.30am and travel by underground to the gallery. There's a nice cafe there where we will be able to buy lunch if we wish. Entrance is FREE. Please let our Parish Administrator know if you want to come: parishoffice@holytrinitysloanesquare.co.uk
'We plough the fields and scatter...'
Next Sunday (September 30) is our Harvest Festival. This year we are especially giving thanks for water and the importance of ensuring that everybody has access to clean water. At our 11am Sung Eucharist there will be a Jazz Mass. Once again, our Harvest gifts will be used to support the Glass Door charity, based in the Kings Road, as it prepares to open its winter shelters in local churches to homeless guests. We would really welcome donations of: tea and coffee, hot chocolate (made with water), sugar, breakfast cereals, biscuits, jams and marmalades, vegetarian soups, tomato ketchup / brown sauce, rice, tinned tomatoes, towels, socks, underwear, razors, toiletries, toothbrushes and toothpaste. Perishable goods are difficult to store but all dry goods and toiletries are very gratefully received.
Harvest Bring and Share Lunch
After our Harvest Festival Jazz Mass (on Sunday 30 September) we are holding a Parish Bring and Share Lunch in the Parish Room. Please let our Parish Administrator know, by phone or e-mail, if you wish to attend and what you will bring to share. Lunch will be served about 1pm.
Awareness Sunday and 'The Culture of God'
It was a joy to welcome the Awareness Foundation to Holy Trinity last Sunday for Awareness Sunday. It's 15 years since the Foundation was created at Holy Trinity by Bishop Michael Marshall and Fr. Nadim Nassar. In his sermon, Fr. Nadim underlined the importance of being aware of who we are in an age when we spend so much of our time looking at screens on our mobile phones, tablets and televisions. After the service, Fr. Nadim signed copies of his new book, 'The Culture of God'.
All creatures great and small
Our annual blessing of pets takes place at Holy Trinity on Sunday 7 October at 3pm when we will celebrate God's love, care and concern for everything he has created. Our new Congregational Choir will be singing and refreshments will be served afterwards. Fr. Grant, who is the owner of two Jack Russells, will be giving the talk.
Activists, Artisans and Apprentices
Our 3rd Arts and Crafts Festival got off to a flying start on Thursday night. Three guest speakers - Maggie Goodall from the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, Luke Hughes from Luke Hughes Furniture and the Rt. Hon. Frank Field MP - each addressed this year's theme 'Activists, Artisans and Apprentices' and answered questions from the audience. There's still more to come on Friday night with a triubute to Sir John Betjeman and Gavin Stamp who saved Holy Trinity from demolition in the 1970s and on Saturday we are welcoming a woodcarver, lettercarver and printmaker to demonstrate their art as part of our contribution to Open House London. Our Parish Events Manager will also be turning tins cans into beautiful butterflies and there will be guided tours of the building. For more details see our website: www.holytrinityartandcrafts.org
There but not there
This year sees the centenary of the end of the First World War and at Holy Trinity we will be hosting the Civic Service for the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea on Sunday 11 November. This week the Parochial Church Council approved the proposal of making an appeal to the congregation to purchase a 6ft metal 'Tommie' from the the charity 'There but not there' as part of the commemorations. The 'Tommie' will cost £750 and will be placed in the Memorial Chapel every year in the month of November. The money raised from the sale of the sculptures is passed on to a range of charities from the Royal Foundation's Armed Forces Programme to Help for Heroes. If you would like to contribute, please put your donation in a gift aid envelope marked 'Tommie'. To find our more, explore the charity's website: www.therebutnothere.org.uk
Countdown to the Sleep Out
We're just two weeks away from the annual Sleep Out in the Duke of York Square to raise money for the Glass Door charity.
Glass Door operates night shelters in churches for homeless men and women in the winter — from mid-November to April. They aim to raise at least £200,000 to ensure they can run all their shelters next winter, allowing about 120 men and women a safe, warm and dry place to sleep every night during the coldest months of the year.
"The rise in homelessness is a scandal, and we will continue to do all we can to get people off the streets and into shelters. But we can't do it alone," says Glass Door's chair of trustees Rev Brian Leathard, Rector of St. Luke's, Chelsea
Both Fr. Nicholas and Fr. Grant will join the hundreds of individuals in the Duke of York Square on Friday 5 October and invite members of the congregation to join them. If you would like us to reach our £1000 target to help the homeless, please donate at: www.glassdoor.org.uk/appeal/holy-trinity-sloane-square-sleeps-out
Guilt Trip at Intermission It's never too soon to book tickets for our Intermission Youth Theatre's play which opens on October 31 and runs for a month, Wednesday to Saturday. 'Guilt Trip' is based on Shakespeare's 'Much Ado About Nothing': intermissiontheatre.ticketabc.com/events/guilt-trip/
