Beta Testers Needed

The APMSA is preparing to launch the APMSA Community by early November. The site will be a secure, dynamic online community for students, potential podiatry students, and alumni to interact, engage, and discuss issues. Community members will have a place to collaborate, ask questions, provide answers or resources, and discuss the hot topics of the day.

We need beta group volunteers to field-test the Community in the coming weeks to help make the site more comprehensive and user-friendly. What will this entail? Beta Testing is the testing phase prior to the launch of an online community site. It requires a sample group of users to complete exercises designed to test the functionality and features of the site. To join the APMSA Beta Testing Group, please e-mail Heather Keith at hakeith@apmsa.org.
The APMSA is thrilled to announce the 2019 DPM Match Day will occur on the same day as MDs and DOs -- March 15. This follows two years of collaboration with the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine (AACPM) and the National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners (NBPME) to modify the residency Match Week dates to coincide with that of MDs and DOs. Thank you to the AACPM, NBPME, and others who advocated for the change.

Please thank your deans for supporting and voting for Match Day alignment. To read the AACPM press release, click here.

Increasing Scholarly Activity Among Doctors

The Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association (JAPMA) has published a study that addresses the decline in physicians-scientists conducting medical research over several decades and a strategic method to increase research activity among medical students, residents and faculty.

Des Moines University College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery created a Strategic Research Plan (SRP) aimed at cultivating scholarly interest among students and faculty, including migrating to the existing curriculum to an evidence basis, adding extracurricular research opportunities, adding a Director of Research position, and generally encouraging collaborative research efforts among students, residents and faculty.

After 6 years of SRP implementation, manuscript publications reached 50, in contrast to the 11 published manuscripts in the 6 years prior to SRP implementation. Scientific podium presentations also increased from 6 to 40, and student lead authors increased from 0 to 16, all within the 6 years following SRP implementation. Read the full JAPMA article here.
