GLAD Study, Kitty's story in The Sun, Tracy's Fundraising walk

The BDD Foundation is supporting the GLAD study of depression and anxiety.

Depression and anxiety (including OCD, BDD, and other related disorders) are common but complex disorders whose research needs very large sample sizes.

The Genetic Links to Anxiety and Depression (GLAD) study aims to recruit >40,000 individuals. Anyone age 16 years or older who has experienced one or more of these disorders during their lives can join this recontactable database to facilitate future research. Participants will also join a national Mental Health BioResource and contribute to the largest ever single study of anxiety and depression.

All enrolment takes place online at www.gladstudy.org.uk. An online animation explains the consent process with more detailed information in text format. Once participants have provided consent and completed an online questionnaire, they will be sent a saliva DNA sample kit to enable genetic studies.

Kitty Wallace, a volunteer and Trustee for the BDD Foundation opens up about her Body Dysmorphia in The Sun's Fabulous Magazine.

'By 15 I was getting up at 5.30am each day to do my make-up. I was an A-grade student, but during every spare moment I’d run to a mirror to check I wasn’t too disgusting'

'I hated strangers looking at me and often refused to leave my bedroom.'

Kitty's aim is to raise awareness of Body Dysmorphia so that diagnosis happens quickly. She also wants to bring hope to those in the grip of the disorder that recovery is always possible with the right treatment, support and determination.  Never give up hope.

'Now I can let negative thoughts go rather than obsessing over them. I want to get married and have children, so I take every day as it comes. Recovery isn’t a straight line, but I’ll get there.'

Please support Tracy and Lisa in their fundraising efforts.

On Saturday 22nd Septermber Tracy and her sister Lisa will be fundraising for the BDD Foundation and the Anne Robson Foundation by doing the London Marathon walk.

This is a cause that is very close to their hearts as a family member has been deeply affected by Body Dysmorphia.

BDD is a mental disorders that causes extreme distress and anxiety on a daily basis to both the sufferer and subsequently their loved ones. As with most mental disorders BDD is underdiagnosed and misunderstood, even by health professionals. However it has prevelance of 2% (meaning it is as common as Anorexia) and usually develops during adolescence, in both boys and girls. As disabling as BDD can be it is treatable and (with a little hard work) a full recovery is possible!
