STUDY ABROAD INFORMATION SESSIONS
Are you interested in learning more about CBU’s study abroad programs? If so, come to the Study Abroad Information Session on Tuesday, September 25 at 1:00 p.m. in the Montesi Executive Center to learn more about our semester/summer abroad programs, travel study trips, and exchange programs. Light refreshments will be provided.
RAFFLE FOR MEMPHIS JAPAN FESTIVAL 

The Offices of Multicultural Student Services and Recreation, in conjunction with the Asian Student Association, will sponsor 30 students to attend the Memphis Japan Festival that will held on Sunday, September 30 at the ​Memphis Botanic Garden. For a chance to win, please enter your name in the raffle contest this week in Alfonso. Transportation will be provided to those who require it. Winners will be contacted on September 28 starting at 1:00 p.m. Please visit the Festival website for more information on this event. Please contact Ian Boyd for more information on the raffle. 
HEALTH & WELLNESS FAIR
Health Services will host a Health & Wellness Fair on Wednesday, September 26 from 11:30 a.m.  to 1:30 p.m. in Buckman Quad. There will be many vendors in attendance with free giveaways, fitness demonstrations, blood pressure checks, lots of educational materials, and many other services. In addition, the Lifeblood mobile unit will be on campus. If you would like to donate, please sign up for an appointment time at clublifeblood.us and enter sponsor code CBCO. 
TASTE OF LATIN AMERICA
As part of Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month (see below), the Office of Multicultural Student Services, Hola CBU, and Voices United are hosting "Taste of Latin America" on Wednesday, September 26 in Sabbatini Lounge, 5:00-7:00 p.m. Not only will you get to learn about various Latin American cultures, you will also get the opportunity to try unique food from the different countries that will be represented. This event is free of charge and open to all students, faculty, and staff.
ALUMNI WEEKEND: SEPTEMBER 28-30

Join CBU's alumni for food, fun, and everything that makes us family! The weekend starts with the Friday night "Welcome Home Bucs" party featuring live music by Bryan Hayes — which is FREE for faculty and staff, so drop by the Advancement Office to register and pick up wristbands! Come out on Friday night and bring your blanket and lawn chairs to enjoy live music, food, and beer on Nolan Field. A complete list of events and registration links can be found at www.cbu.edu/weekend.

September of Service: We Can Do It!


Great job, CBU! We have already served 1,320 hours! We have just one more week to beat our SOS record of 1,958 and reach our goal of 2,000 hours. We can do it!
Last week our volunteers spruced up a senior citizen's yard with Meritan (pictured), provided food for homeless individuals with Refuge Memphis and Urban Bicycle Food Ministry, prevented good dirt from going bad with The Compost Fairy, helped ALSAC set up for the St. Jude Walk/Run, cleaned John F. Kennedy Park with Wolf River Conservancy, and figured out how many SOS volunteers it takes to screw in a lightbulb (7!) with Elmwood Cemetery, where we helped with a trial lighting display for an October event.

  • Monday (today!), September 24, 2:15-5:20 p.m., gardening at Ave Maria Home for seniors (4 spots left).
  • Tuesday, September 25,  2:15-5:20 p.m., watch for cancellations for the Mid-South Food Bank. 
  • Thursday, September 27, 1:15-5:20 p.m., landscaping, trimming and pruning trees, in our neighboring Beltline Community with Jacob's Ladder (8 spots left).
  • Saturday, September 29, 8:15-12:00 p.m., watch for cancellations for our biggest event of the month, Memphis River Parks.
And please please please, if you can't make it to an event, let your leader know so you can be deleted from the website list. Your leader's contact information is listed on the calendar. When you don't cancel, you are keeping someone else from signing up to help our community.

New Fitness Center Open in Canale Arena


The new upgraded CBU fitness facility is now open on the east balcony of Canale Arena and available for student, faculty, and staff use. An open house will be held on Thursday, September 27 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to tour the improvements and learn about the new equipment.
The Office of Recreation is seeking to hire 15 students to work the front desk in the new Canale Arena fitness facility. The Office is also seeking three (3) students to wear the mantle of Bucky, making appearances at various events, such as athletic events and Homecoming. Those interested should be energetic, have an excellent personality, and be able to put on a show for the audience.. All applicants must be eligible for Federal Work-Study. BUSY PERSON'S RETREAT: September 30 – October 4
Need time to slow down? We have an opportunity for you! This retreat is designed for you to explore your personal story with the help of a spiritual companion 1-on-1 for at least 30 minutes each day of the retreat, Monday through Thursday. The spiritual companions are all experienced with this retreat and work around your busy schedule! The retreat team is not sending you out without any resource, but, rather, they have compiled a journal of their personal reflections around the theme "Do I trust God has a plan for my life." The retreat is free, but spots are limited. If you want more information or to sign up, contact cbuministry@cbu.edu!
FALL BREAK SERVICE TRIP (LAST WEEK TO SIGN UP!): Spend your fall break in service! The Fall Break Service is taking place in St. Louis at the L’Arche St. Louis Community. CBU FOOD PANTRY: The CBU Food Pantry is open and available for anyone in our CBU community and provides nonperishable food items, spices, and limited hygiene products. If you or someone you know is in need of food, please fill out the form at cbu.edu/food-pantry, and we will set up a time that works for you to pick up the food. The CBU Food Pantry is located in the Campus Ministry Office in the Thomas Center.
STUDENT MASS: Join us to pray together as a faith community every Sunday night at 9:00 p.m. for our weekly Student Mass held in the Stritch Chapel. If you are interested in joining the choir or playing an instrument please contact Joseph Preston at jpreston@cbu.edu.
PB&J SERVICE WITH CAMPUS MINISTRY: Want to give back to your community? Have around an hour to give? Join Campus Ministry in making peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches for St. Mary's weekly meal kitchen! Meet in Alfonso Dining Hall every Wednesday from 3:30 until 4:00 p.m.
ADORATION AND RECONCILIATION: Eucharistic Adoration will be held every Wednesday from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the St. Joseph Chapel located in Barry Hall. Fr. Bruce Cinquegrani will also be available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Please stop by even for a couple of minutes to say a quick prayer moment and a quiet moment in your day.

LIFEBLOOD DONATION DRIVE VOLUNTEERS
First of all, volunteer blood donors are needed at the CBU Health & Wellness Fair on Wednesday, September 26 — each single donation potentially saves three lives!! Volunteers are also needed to help with check-in/check-out and snack bar! Volunteer donors will be randomly selected in a gift card giveaway! MEALS ON WHEELS 

Volunteers are sought for a Meals on Wheels service event in conjunction with MIFA (Memphis Inter-Faith Association), planned for November 20 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The Thanksgiving season offers us no other better time or way to embody the Thanksgiving spirit — as well as the Lasallian spirit — than to serve fellow Memphians by delivering hot meals to their doors. The goal is to acquire 60 committed volunteers to participate in delivering meals to elderly seniors’ homes, with 20 volunteers designated as delivery drivers. (Please specify to me in your email or phone call that you want to be a designated driver). Volunteers will be in groups of 2-3 and will be assigned to a delivery driver. Requirements to be a volunteer are:
  1. 18 years or older
  2. Possess a valid driver’s license
  3. Have proof of insurance (car insurance policy)

Brother Terence McLaughlin is the subject of a feature article in the September issue of Memphis magazine entitled "How Brother Terence McLaughlin Helped Transform Memphis." A profile of Brother Terence, who served as president of CBU from 1962 to 1964 (and on the Board of Trustees from 2007 to 2009), the article focuses on his role in making CBHS the first integrated high school in Memphis in 1963 with the enrollment of Jesse Turner Jr. (pictured above with Brother Terence on the CBU campus in photos from the magazine by Karen Pulfer Focht). Turner, who graduated as co-salutatorian of the CBHS Class of 1967, went on to serve as president of Tri-State Bank and on the national board of the NAACP.
President John Smarrelli Jr. has been selected to be honored by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (Memphis Chapter) as the Outstanding Executive Leader at its annual National Philanthropy Day Crystal Awards on November 13 at the Holiday Inn-University of Memphis. Dr. Smarrelli was cited by the AFP for his "commitment to Catholic higher education and the Lasallian principles" and was praised as an "agent of change" by Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland and for exhibiting "the highest caliber of what any university should want in the person leading their organization" by former Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell in their nomination letters for the award.

Koinonia Student-Led Retreat


Koinonia, a  Greek word meaning "Community," is a peer-led, peer-planned, and peer-directed retreat that will be a wonderful experience open to all of our students. Join us for a stress free weekend as we discover ourselves, God, and others. The retreat will take place at St. Columba Retreat Center on November 2-4. Spots are filling up quickly! DIVINE VOICES GOSPEL CHOIR UPCOMING CONCERTS & EVENTS
• DVGC DAY (5th Annual Celebration of the founding of the Divine Voices Gospel Choir) will be held on Wednesday, October 3 from 11:00 a.m. to  4:30 p.m. in the Buckman Quad. Come visit DVGC to purchase concert tickets, food, and apparel. Divine Voices Gospel Choir is now in preparation for its Fall Concert on Thursday, October 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the University Theater. Tickets are now available for purchase online at www.cbudivinevoices.org for $3 in advance and $2 with a student ID. CATHOLIC CLIMATE COVENANT LUNCHEON
The Living Learning Communities will be hosting a free Pita Pita lunch discussion in honor of the Feast of Saint Francis on Thursday, October 4 in the LLC 104 classroom, 12:30-1:45 p.m. This Catholic Climate Covenant program, entitled “Who Is My Neighbor in a Climate-Threatened World?,” examines the connections between immigration, refugees, and global climate change. MEN'S SOCCER (1-4-1, 1-1-1 GSC): The Bucs battled Alabama Huntsville to a scoreless draw in double overtime Friday night at Signaigo Field. On Sunday afternoon, the Bucs scored the lone goal in the match early in the second half, which was enough to edge the West Alabama Tigers 1-0. The Bucs are on the road for their next two matchups, against Ouachita Baptist Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. and Union Sunday afternoon at 3:15 p.m.  Full schedule… 
WOMEN'S SOCCER (4-2-1, 3-1-0 GSC): The Lady Bucs exploded for six goals in a 26-minute span of the second half to defeat Alabama Huntsville 6-1 Friday night. On Sunday, the Lady Bucs scored three goals in a four-minute span of the first half at Signaigo Field, building a lead they would not relinquish in a 3-1 win over GSC foe West Alabama. The Lady Bucs continue their home stand Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m. as they host Rhodes at Signaigo Field. Full schedule… 
VOLLEYBALL: (7-9, 2-3 GSC): Host West Alabama swept a Gulf South Conference match from the Lady Bucs Thursday night, 3-0.
