Hello, Kitty

While the magnificent beast atop this cabinet may be incredibly fascinating with her mouse-killing steely gaze, I instead, want to talk about the cabinet upon which she sits. It is one of a pair of cabinets I was recently commissioned to make. My customer inherited her musician father's vinyl album collection and wanted a special place to store them. She also has a round sofa in her living room and requested curved cabinets that would align with the back of the sofa.

This customer wanted two cabinets instead of one big one so she could have greater flexibility of placement within her living space. But instead of them matching exactly, she wanted them to coordinate with each other. So on one cabinet (below, left), I used mostly plywood endgrain pieces (skinny lengthwise stripes). And on the other cabinet (below, right), I used mostly facegrain pieces (wide crosswise stripes). All those angled pieces on the tops and sides are offcuts and scraps from past projects. I love giving these scraps of plywood new life within new projects, instead of sending them to the landfill.
In our design discussions, my customer and I decided that she would need some flat areas among the unevenness on the tops, where she could set things. So I included some rectangles of my handwoven fabric, dyed in the same grays as the wood. To protect the fabric, it's covered with glass and framed with aluminum.
Below is a photo of the cabinets fulfilling their destiny, holding the records in my customer's house. I love how the pattern repetition on the top mimics the repeated pattern of the album spines. I also picked out colors from her other furnishings and peppered the edges of the offcut pieces with them to reference the room, as well as the various colors on the album covers.
This was such a fun project! I wouldn't be able to do things like this without the confidence of customers like this one, who believed in my vision and ability to create something special for her. I appreciate my customers so very much!
